Please help with Genre and potential submissions

Post by mrbobolina » Tue Sep 16, 2014 11:55 am

Hi everyone,

Been working on this song for awhile. I'd like to know what Genre or better yet, what sort of Taxi listings I might submit this to. I welcome opinions about the song itself and the mix, also.

Here's the link: https://soundcloud.com/mrbobolina/i-always-knew

Thanks in advance for taking the time to listen,

Michael

Very nice song Michael. I would say look at the Adult Contemporary listings. You could send it to Taxi for a review and ask them what they think.

Never knew we can ask Taxi to review it? Did you mean the $25 custom critique or send them an email with the link to the song? This is interesting.

Very well done! I would say soul or neo soul.

yeah the custom critique. is it $25 now? used to be $20.

Anyways - if you do this, ask some specific questions about things you are wondering about to make sure the screener addresses those.

Thanks for your input and compliments everyone. I have considered sending the song to Taxi for a custom critique...I wanted to get some opinions from you guys first.

Best regards,
Michael

It's refreshingly different, and a very pleasant voice. I'd say it's Adult Contemporary / Lounge Jazz . I wouldn't call this Neo-Soul (sorry, Len) as that implies Raphael Saddiq and the like.

Structurally, I think it works well, although I was expecting something on the eigth line of each verse – that final perfect rhyme on the same rhythm is just too much, to my ears. Be nice if you did something to it like you did at the end of the bridge, just for ear candy. Perfect rhymes seem to stick out these days, and with my own songs I find myself messing with varying numbers of syllables so the rhyme isn't always on the last. But that's just me :)

The drums could use a little more fluidity, and those lovely gentle chord stabs late on feel like they're slightly early – has the .wav shifted in the time line, perhaps?

Good stuff.
Nick

Wow, great advice, Nick. It's funny how you become so familiar with your own song that sometimes you overlook other possibilities.

Thanks again,
Michael
