Roommate & Advice/First Timer - Americana/Bluegrass/Jazz

I'm trying to convince my mandolin player to join me on this adventure, but not sure he'll bite. If he doesn't come I'll be looking for a room mate for a double bed room to share expenses.

I'm also looking to speak to an experienced rally goer to get some tips on how to best use my time.

1) Is there an orientation?
2) Mentor sessions?
3) performance opportunities?
4) how many CD's do you bring... or are samplers best?

Hello Marc,

This will only be my second rally, but I can speak to some of the things you mentioned.

Mentor sessions - get there by 10 or 11am on Thursday if you can (eat beforehand) and stand in line to sign up with a one on one mentor. Even if the one on one mentor session stinks the following day (which I doubt will be the case) you will not regret the relationships and time you spent standing in line. That was one of the best experiences for me and I am now good friends with and am working with one of the guys I met in line.

I brought a "sampler" CD and will be doing the same this year. Make it professional and make sure you put your contact information on the CD AND THE CASE and the information about the songs ON THE CASE, not just the CD. I learned that from watching Taxi TV... I made the rookie mistake of just having my info on the CD last year and saving money by using paper envelopes for my CDs... not this year.
