(a fabricated story just for example) re:Publishing

Does this imagery help anyone?

The PUBLISHING aspect of music started sorta like this...
(a fabricated story just for example)

Mozart writes a tune and plays it for the Royals (King/Queen/Prince and Princess)
The Royals want their child to learn the tune on the Harpsicord
The Royals pay Mozart to Publish his work in printed form, no problem, he inks it out on some paper...
(He is the Publisher and gets 100%)
The Masses hear the tune and want to play it
Mozart can't make enough copies by himself so he makes a deal with a house full of scribes to make them...
The deal is, They will get a percentage to cover the costs of housing and feeding the scribes and make a profit.
So they are now Co-Publishing (50%/50% for example)
Then Mozart gets in debt and for some quick cash he makes a deal with the House...
They pay him a sack of gold and he relinquishes his percentage on the Publishing and he gets the quick cash
(so the House gets 100% of the Publishing)
Mozart still gets 100% of the money when he plays his song at the Local Ball/Coronation/Tavern
He is still the 100% WRITER
Mozart (You) joined The Local Professional Bards (ASCAP/BMI) who have thugs out there to collect Percentages from
other Balls/Coronations/Taverns that are using their MEMBER's music to draw people in for profit.
When the money comes back to the Bards they split it by the Percentages that they have on record.
50% goes to the Writer for his Creation and 50% goes to the Publisher for supplying the sheet music used.
Mozart gets 100% of the WRITER's share
House of Scribes gets 100% of the PUBLISHER's share

In these modern days publishing has become a sort of bargaining tool...
In writing for film/TV, the publishing is often thought of as a fee for the scribes to get the song out to those who are going to use it. Places that we might not have access to.
If the song grows legs all of it's own, no need to let go of the publishing percentage
At that point you would add PUBLISHER to your title as you update your registration with the Bards
If the song is liked by an Artist who would want to cut their own version, the Publishing would become negotiable.

Hope this wasn't too long of a Ramble!

Cass, I love you man ...
You've got a way of saying things that puts it all in perspective.
Now even I can understand how this works...
