learning curve

Post by Gypsygal » Thu Mar 26, 2015 6:48 pm

I attribute this return to my incomplete learning curve. This was asking for a cue,"keep it simple and repetitive" were mentioned and repeated in the description. (below)

Screener comment: Needs a bit more variety and development.

Here's the listing and my track is "Steppin on the Runway" on my taxi page.

U150220PC

SIMPLE, CONTEMPORARY POP INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by the CEO of a great, NON-Exclusive Hollywood Music Library for a variety of Reality TV Shows! He’s actively searching for classy sounding, Mid-Tempo Pop Cues that could be heard on TV shows like Miss Universe, Project Runway, Top Model, etc., etc., etc. Listen to the following references to get yourself in the ballpark: Miss Universe (Starting at 1:28:45): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBeoAw4-Soo Project Runway (Up until :33): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4j6vIi2gPU Top Model (Starting at 1:30): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ls9a3zRl-E Quoting the Source: “Although we pitch to reality TV, we only accept high quality music. Nothing that is medium bar or below, only the best of the best! We want simple, straight-ahead music that grooves with a good beat and can fit some classy shows.” Give him cues that are slightly electronic, have some light percussive elements, and are simple. No need to go overboard with this opportunity. Repetitive motifs are recommended for this pitch. Don’t submit music that has a melody line or complex chords; keep it simple and straightforward. Your music will be placed under dialogue, so nothing too harsh or frenetic. Just to reiterate: KEEP IT SIMPLE!! Submit well-produced Instrumental Cues that are NOT stiff or MIDI-driven. Your submissions should be at least 60 seconds long. Faded endings are not recommended.

I would appreciate any comments here as always, but I begin to see I could have done more to make this more usable. Simple doesn't have to mean repetitive, in fact I see the skill here would be to use subtle contrast and dynamics etc. so it is still good music.

"repetitive motifs", probably not repetitive as in no chord changes. That's maybe what the variety and development critique meant. Also, normally imo there should be maybe a four bar phrase with an open cadence, and then a four bar phrase with a closed cadence. Eg. last note on open cadence a 5th, and closed cadence a 1.

It's sort of like those midi backing track pattern measures that are defaulted to CMaj. that need to be transposed to a different chord eventually. Same pattern, same motif, different chord.

Hey Diane, I'm certainly no expert on these types of tracks, but I did notice a few people posted their forwards for this same listing in the "Forwards" section. You may want to jump in and listen to their tunes and compare them to yours to see what worked and made it through for this listing.

Thanks Matt, I did the listening you suggested and I began to see how much more I could have done with the track,
and next time I'll use a different approach. Sometimes learning is painful, but the rewards of improvement are valuable.

Appreciate it ! :)

Have you re-named the track? I couldn't find it on your TAXI profile.

Hey Zac -No sorry, I deleted it during a recent housecleaning and it's now being worked on so I may re-post it when it's developed more. I agree with your posted suggestion re making changes on submissions by the way, was great to read what you had to say on that point, seems like a logical progression to me which would really make a lot of sense.
