The only time I get to listen that way is on an older ('99?) aftermarket car stereo (in Ma's Crown Vic)
that has preset "sounds"... weird... do they still do that, and title them by genre?! :? 8-)
I think there are 5 or 6: rock, jazz, etc... so I punch through the button until I find the best-sounding balance... and that, from just a cheap disc/computer-burned mp3. Surprisingly, even some of the roughs sound pretty good.

I don't even bother to listen in my car anymore, for reasons already mentioned above. Cheap speakers, cheap stereo. It kind of became a crutch. I figured if I have to listen elsewhere, then that means I don't trust my monitors. I trust them now. It took me about a year to get there and some coin, but worth it.

Yeah, no car for me either. I check the mix on my studio monitors, in my cans, in a bluetooth speaker in my kitchen, a set of pc speakers, and a different pair of cans. 9/10 times the mix is represented well by just my studio monitors and my studio cans. If my mix sounds bad, it's the mixing, not the monitoring.

I have considered the Focusrite VRM box, but hesitate as there's no real problem it could solve as is..

i've had the mackies hr824s too for many years (love them).. but i now believe the secret to great sound could be an A/B switch and two completely different monitors..

my 8" mackies let me hear superlows and sugar sprinkled sounds i should hear while my 5" krk g3rockit (todays ns-10 to me imo) are the truth monitors together with some good reference head phones and a little toggling A/B some reference music too.. lately my mixs are much better even with stock pluggins..

the 5" truth monitors (i call them) are surprising affordable and even more surprisingly most buy the big 8" first (like me)

i also found the krk's easy to listen to for many more hours // so far..

just sharing recent experiences
