Exlusive listings
Hi, all -
I'm curious to get some feedback from the community about exclusive listings. I've been in the film/TV game a long time and never been asked for exclusive rights when having face-to-face meetings, so I've been side-stepping TAXI's exclusive listings.
Am I wrong? Out-of-date? In need of schooling?
Any info welcome. Since joining TAXI in Feb. I've had 12 fwds. yielding 0 calls or emails from music sups, so now I'm reconsidering my stance.
Thanks,
AD

Re: Exlusive listings
I also joined this year. Just remember that it takes time for the cycle to run its course. It may take months, sometimes years for a forward to turn into a signed deal or placement. This is a long-term play, so keep writing and submitting.
If you are having face to face meetings with music decision makers you are doing fine on your own already. Taxi is well known in the industry for providing its customers with quality vetted content. Stick around and keep plugging away at it.

not definitive, just some thoughts....

and Matt's thoughts on the "diversified portfolio" - some non-ex, some ex, some WFH, some whatever. Sorry if you have to watch all 7 parts to get that info.

Re: Exclusive listings
I used to totally shy away from exclusive, but now I've been trying to do a little bit of everything to see what happens. Signed about 20 tracks exclusively this summer to a couple of libraries so we'll see what it brings!!

Re: Exlusive listings
Ive tried to seach the forum about this, but didnt find the exact answer. So here is the thing: I submitted a track to two different listing at the same time. The tracks are very alike, one of them sound just wider and a bit more orchestral. Both of them got forward for their listing and one of them i signed a non-exclusive deal. The other one i havent heard from yet. If they offer me a deal, is it ok to sign it? I know that this is why it is non-exclusive, but I see there is some different understanding about this issue. What do you guys think?
Didnt mean to hijack this topic, but think this kinda belonged here. Let me know i should write this in a new topic

Re: Exlusive listings
Adam, my short version opinion about exclusive listings: signing something to a library on an exclusive basis is a good thing. This places perceived "value" on your song AND the catalog of the library. Also, often with exclusive libraries, they will pay an upfront fee for the right to be the exclusive publisher for sync purposes.
Tore, I'm assuming they are the same song with a different mix/production. If the second library (the one you haven't heard from) offers only exclusive deals, your song is off the table for them. If they are non-exclusive, you are free to sign the song to them.

Re: Exlusive listings
You want to have a situation where the buyer wants an exclusive, with the caveat that some of the most exclusive libraries are small and may give preference to internally-generated titles; the upside of of smaller exclusives is that they won't take tracks they're not gonna work. There are many large non-exclusives that'll accept nearly anything, because they expect their users to browse their site for what they need. It's a very good idea to browse the library(ies) of a potential client, to see how good/consistent they are with tagging/metadata and whether their genres/categories seem appropriate-though you might not be the best judge of that, right out of the gate.
Like Russell said, an upfront fee is an indication that they'll work to make their $ back.

Re: Exlusive listings
Exclusive libraries have generated most of my income. Non-exclusives have generated peanuts in comparison. Up until recently I had more cues in non-exclusive. One exclusive did nothing for years with an album I signed them. Then they sold out to a major, I got a smalll cut of that sale price and since then those cues are now getting used earning a little in backend. So even bad deals can come out ok.
But there is no right or wrong answer. There is only whether or not a given deal seems right for you at that point in time in relation to your larger strategy.
If you don't have a strategy, then how do you know where you're going and what it will look like when you get there?
