Weird Logic Pro X problem?

Post by ComposerLDG » Wed Nov 18, 2015 6:31 am

Hi all. I'm working on a track, and I don't know what I did, but the stereo out track doesn't show the audio effects box where you can add effects (limiter, etc.). I've tried going through settings and Googling, but to no avail. I'm sure it's something simple and will be a forehead smacker once it's pointed out, but for now I'm clueless. Anyone?

Thanks,

And, never mind! I figured it out. I accidentally had one of the tracks set on surround instead of stereo out. See what I mean? Simple user error. :)

bravo!

that is a nemesis of mine, if I accidentally put a track in surround.

Logic usually has the output 1-2 where you put master effects, then the master fader.

and in surround mode, the two are reversed which has been a head scratcher for me. then again I don't work in surround. May if I spent some time with it, it could start to make sense.

For a while, all new tracks I created were magically set to 'no output'. It's possible it was operator error (always possible of course). But I am pretty sure I didn't change the output in the new track dialog. Logic has a buggy mind of its own sometimes. I have a 10+ year love/hate affair with Logic Pro. So many incredible features, and such an insanely good value. But there is always something breaking my flow; there's always a work around, but when I am writing I don't want to DO a work around!

I have some deadlines to meet, and then I'm diving into Traction to see if the flow is better, at least for the tracking/writing part. Looks pretty great

Drove me crazy, Andy! I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was. Turns out it was something so simple. It's easy to accidentally hit 5.1 when setting up a channel.

I'm a fan of Tracktion; it's really good at getting out of your way and letting you work.

Wow, Traction is fun. I've just had about a day with it, but I love it already. It feels so...modern and zippy. I have read in various comments that you like it Mojo - I can see why now! I have used Logic and Digital Performer for many years, and they are very capable DAWs, of course - but 'fun'? Not so much. Traction is.

Yeah, and I can actually recommend it, now that it's once again under development; for a period of nearly 8 years it was orphanware, and I just put up with a few glaring bugs and kept using it anyway, cuz it was fast and fun. It's actually been around for a long time; were it not for Mackie's neglect, it'd be probably version 10+, rather than 6, but the original designer Julian Storer bought the rights back a couple years ago and now, it's back and better than ever.

Keep finding lots of things to love about Tracktion. One of my favs: edit clips. An entire sequencing window ('arrange' window in Logic) is called an 'edit' in Tracktion, and each of these edits are freely reducible (freeze/render) to stereo audio tracks - just drag the tab into a different edit window and there it is. Logic X has much more clunky, buggy, unintuitive versions of this - 'Alternatives', and the still very buggy 'arrangement markers'; in Tracktion it's just drag and drop, and you have whole chunks of music easily manipulated- and easily edited. I love it. Fast, obvious, not buggy.

Ironically enough, Logic's ancient predecessor - 'Creator' - had a nifty way of doing this very kind of thing, with an arrangement window. You could make 16 channel sequences and then arrange and/or stack them (up to 4). It was all live MIDI on an AtariST in those days, so there were some serious cloggy timing issues if you had a lot of MIDI going on. But conceptually, it was a brilliant and easy way to try different arrangement ideas.

I had to finish a couple things in Logic X in the last few days, and couldn't wait to get back to Tracktion. It actually reminds me of the old AtariST days, just because it's so fun, rather than a tech slog. Yay!

^^^ There you have it, folks!

I feel a bit like a carny barker, but Tracktion's actually got the goods. My favorite feature? Bus any track to any other track.
