Is it troll feeding season... I forget. I fed, my apologies. Seems sort of silly to moan about Taxi with so much actual serious stuff going on in the world. If you want to use a great conduit to industry decision makers, pay the membership and give it a try. Don't expect success that you can live on, these things take time, like 5+ years. It's not a lottery at all, it's a business of skill and patience. You have to have both or else you end up writing baseless internet gripes that do nothing but stroke your own ego. If you are serious about the business, this is a great place. If your mom thinks you are a great singer and you play clubs occasionally, but don't have the desire or intention of putting in the work, "save" the $300 and try to network on your own.

Len, "hope merchant" implies selling a product with no substance. TAXI's product is all substance. And looking at shoodB's use of the term, I am sure it was not meant in a complementary manner.

I don't know Russell, the only thing that pops up in google is a book with that title. I guess only the person who used that term really knows. My first impression was that it was a Marxist term for capitalist enterprise, but then investing in the stock market isn't exactly Marxism!
Hope merchant isn't even listed as a synonym for "snake oil". So really, I don't know!
