Some exclusives want the copyright

How typical is this, those of you who have been around the block more than a few times?

I understand that with traditional publishing, signing a publishing deal does assign the copyright (look at any major release and you will see © Whatever Music Company), but how common is it for libraries wanting an exclusive deal to also include language that you are transferring them the copyright?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Yes, some exclusive deals are like that. Others are just exclusive to pitching for Film/TV but allow you to still sell the tracks on CDs & downloads, pitch to artists, etc. It varies.

*IF* you only pitch for Film/TV and don't care about those other avenues, it probably doesn't matter that much. One thing you can ask the library is if they will allow you to do those other things--- sell CDs & downloads, pitch to artists, etc. Of course, with them having the copyright, not sure how you could do that without them collecting the publisher's share on everything. It all depends on what you care about. If we're talking instrumental cues, chances are you probably don't have other uses outside Film/TV anyway. For songs, it can be an issue.

Thanks, Casey, good points and information. These are instrumentals that I don't plan on releasing to the general public. And yes, it is a 50-50 standard split.
