Video: Rogue Mandolin - great value for beginners
Recorded this last week, if you are looking to add a fun instrument to your cue composer tool box, check out this very affordable Rogue Mandolin available at Musicians Friend. Here's a quick overview:

I'm going to restring it with some better strings and work on the tuning, then she'll be ready for action. This is NOT a professional grade instrument, but who says you need that to record swampy cues?

Rogue stuff's half-decent; another retailer that caters to bottom feeders is Rondo Music-when you absolutely have to pay the least.

I have a banjo and one of their lap steels, both of which are good enough to record with. They have probably the cheapest resonator guitars that are any good. Lately, I've been eyeing this thing here: http://www.rondomusic.com/product8204.html A fretless electric U-bass for under two bills? Yes, please. I wouldn't buy anything of theirs as a first or only axe, but for specialty instruments like 6/12 doublenecks or the occasional baritone part, it's an economical way to expand your palette.

Nice! God... I never thought about buying basses, I have a cheap Fender already. Ugh... don't get me started on THAT path.

My mandolin story: after some 4 years of listening to the Tuesday-Night Celtic Trad Seisiuns
(Irish spelling of Sessions), I decided I wanted to learn & participate, rather than just spectate.
Being familiar with Bluegrass, I also discovered that I preferred the sound of the F-style over the traditional A-style.
After some YouTube reviews and budget considerations, I settled on the Rover RM-75.
Although it's considered by some to be a "beginner's" instrument, it's solid, well-made,
and certainly holds its own when "playing with the big boys" at the Pub.

I started in January - recording one live tune every couple of weeks
(jig, reel, hop-jig); then slowly - learning by ear; not in a big hurry - but wanting to play each well enough to be invited to sit in.
Got about 8 tunes down before injury to my elbow required I take a break. OUCH!
So much fun, though... that, and the pint, of course.
Hope y'all have fun learning, playing the mandolin; I'm having a blast...
gettin "jiggy-widdit!"
Here's the first song on which I strummed the mandolin part... nothing fancy:

Cheers!
