Forwards used vs. forwards not used

Post by Aleksei » Fri Apr 08, 2016 6:23 pm

Hey guys, I am wondering what your success rate is with forwards actually resulting in a deal.

I'm new this year to Taxi. So far I've made 39 submissions. 9 were forwarded, or 23%. That is a fine rate, but I need an approximate sense of the likelihood of any of these forwards paying off to help me assess if this venture will be worthwhile.

Would anybody here be so generous as to share their experiences with forwards used VS forwards not used?

Thanks

(Admin: feel free to move this to a more relevant forum. I couldn't find one)

Aleksei,

Once one starts to develop relationships with publishers, some, if not many, of the returns from TAXI listings will end up as deals.

There is a logical reason for this. A TAXI listing has a fairly narrow focus, and rightfully so. It is very specific in terms of a genre for a specific need of the end user.

A library that you establish a relationship with has a much broader viewpoint,: will this track fit in our library?
(Genre, production, broadcast quality etc.)

An ah hah after a while is that the cue that was returned by TAXI for a listing that is now a deal with a library is that the track may not have even existied unless you wrote the cue for the listing by being motivated by a deadline. I think there is tremendous value in the process of getting the work done on a timely basis. The deadline drives that motivation.

So is this a worthwhile venture? Only if one learns to absorb rejection and keep going in spite of the rejection.

I think to have forward momentum, one has to have a critical mass of submissions to get a critical mass of forwards to get a critical mass of deals to get a critical mass of placements that result in a payday. (Sorry for the run on sentence)

The last time I checked, and every time I check, this sequence is always in this order.

I have yet to have a placement on a cue I never produced

24% is a great forward rate... I've been at this just over a year and my forward rate is about 28%. I submitted about 250 cues my first year (that's a little aggressive, I know). I've got two library relationships now, and I hope that grows this year. It's a numbers and time game, you are certainly on the right track!

Gents,

I'm going to move this to another place later today. I'm thinking the Forwards area of the forum might be the best place.

thx,
Michael

Those other threads were 100% on point, I probably should have done a forum search first.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Congratulations on your successes too!
