The most important plugins are the ones you know how to use, subjectively speaking. Unless you're the adventurous type, they'll be the ones you spend the most time with. In an absolute sense, the most important are A) equalisation, B) compression (in its varying forms) and C) reverb, in roughly that order, which is approximately the order in which they were developed, and for the following reasons:
A) I didn't know where the aytch-eeh double hockey sticks to put the microphone OR
B) ...but it was definitely too far OR
C)...but it was definitely too close
Like the children of Lake Wobegon, all the DAWs are above average, in that they include the Big 3; those and Melodyne, and you're set.
Unless.
Unless you find that the native effects are a bit clunky or aren't quite getting the job done as efficiently or smoothly as you might like, but you'll have to spend some time with them to know that.
most important plugins?

Pro tools 11 doesn't have one of these, not sure if 12 has. I just bought it but haven't used it yet.
It's the side chain facility, along with the multi band dynamic compression that got me in the first instance for pushing specific bass frequencies down with the kick.

It won't break the bank either.

The latest Melodyne can do this kind of stuff I think. I've bought the upgrade but haven't installed it yet. Thor might already have it.I find this plugin intriguing, and it's on sale this week for half off. I'm seriously thinking about purchasing it.It seems to do what I always wished I could do but couldn't,lol!

I think I've decided to pass for now. I get easily side-tracked, and I'd really just like to focus on other things besides sound designing at the moment, lol!
