NEED HELP ... How to use two computers

Post by piwacquet » Thu Dec 01, 2016 12:35 pm

If anyone knows how to put two computers together and configure them to use one for VST's and Sound Libraries and the other for DAW, ect., could you please give me detailed instructions (with pictures) on how to do it. I have looked on the web and youtube, but can't get anything I can understand. I have one Dell T5500 workstation and getting another one shortly. I use Cubase 8 and I have a Steinberg UR22 Interface and a Digi 002 (I use to use ProTools).

Thanks for any help
Mike

Mike, I've never done it.

I'm not sure if it's available in the newer versions of Cubase??

Vienna ensemble works well.

Had a 2 computer setup for a short time but ditched it when I bought one mega powerful machine.

Especially if you already are going to buy another machine, I would consider just getting a more powerful pc to replace the existing Dell and save on the extra expense of VE Pro.

Mazz had such a rig; from what I can recall, the DAW computer sent MIDI over a LAN to the samplers/servers, which fired the notes back as audio via several (rather expensive) multichannel interfaces. Vienna Ensemble works a little differently; you can send the audio back over the same ethernet cable, but the ethernet cable type is important, depending on the number of computers you're using. I'm sure there's much more information on Vienna's site than I could give you and there are probably some tutorials on the YouTubes.

The reason most folks don't need this kinda setup anymore is that 64-bit operating systems can access many more streams of sampled audio and the ability to access tons of RAM kinda obviated the need to spread samples over so many machines, so if you're not still on 32-bit XP Pro, you should be able to build a single tower to suit your needs.

Thanks for responding Len, Andy and Mojo. I'm just not very tech savvy and had read where some people spread the load over different computers. It can get expensive I guess. I'll look at the options you guys mentioned and go from there. I really appreciate the help.

Vienna Ensemble works a little differently; you can send the audio back over the same ethernet cable,
Supports up to 48 MIDI ports and 768 audio ports per instance.
your ur22 only has 2 audio ins/outs, so scratch the steinberg vst system link
