Too tense?

Post by daveydad » Tue Apr 11, 2017 1:35 pm

I took an existing track and mixed it differently. Think it fits the bill? Wondering if it's too much on the creepy side...

AMBIENT TENSION INSTRUMENTAL DRONE CUES are needed by a very successful, NON-Exclusive Music Library owned by two highly accomplished industry veterans. They’re looking for a whole bunch of those Tension-Inducing Drones Cues that you’d hear on shows like (but not limited to) The People vs. OJ Simpson, Making A Murderer, The Mentalist, etc., etc. Please listen to the following references to get yourself in a drone-y state of mind.

The People vs. OJ Simpson (37:30 to 38:55) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFDtDrUfzLM

"The Mentalist" (:00 - :30) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEBFK9koVW4

Making a Murderer (:00 to 1:17) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0xY5onKE8A

Please submit subtle, textural Drone Cues with very little, to no melodic movement and a tension-based, ominous mood that runs from beginning to end. Please avoid any significant builds or crescendos, and let the end of the Cue just die out, rather than sting. Faint, minimal percussive elements can also be added, but remember, less is more. Simplicity and mood are everything for this pitch! Please remember, they don’t need horror-based pieces, so much as something that gives your deodorant a good run for its money because of the subtle tension it creates in the background.

TAXI Tip: These Cues are needed more for TV shows than films, so it’s probably not a good idea to submit big, cinematic Drones that you’d hear from Hans Zimmer or Atticus Ross & Trent Reznor. You’re not trying to win an Oscar with these

I like it Dave but I think it's more SciFy tension. Maybe a little too tense for the listing IMO ;)

It asked for subtle drone, and they used the word "ambient", avoid builds and crescendos, do ominous mood, etc. I think you nailed it. I did something similar except that I did add some traditional low-string figures to make it obvious it was a tension cue and not a horror cue:

Thanks Dave. I may sit on it for a week or so and see if I feel it needs changes...

Sounds right to me, for the tenser scenes of the referenced shows.

Hope you report back on what happens with this on down the road.

Hi David,

Very nice, definitely tense and creepy... is it too creepy? I don't honestly feel qualified to say, I'm too new to this! But for my 10 c worth, it sounds like you could dial it back a notch pretty easily, maybe by just thinning out the number of percussive hits. Muting/removing every 2nd one or so, or something like that. And perhaps just reducing volume on some harsher sounds, like that high noise swell that starts around 36 seconds in.

Thanks for sharing,
Bruce.

I think you nailed it too. I think this could be used for a lot of different things, but it sounds like you got what they were asking for.
