Re: Ideas for TAXI TV Topics
Why not a show just on mixing methodology, especially since it appears you have that ability as a producer/engineer. Subject could be a simple step-by-step guide that would benefit folks new to mixing. Not so much what type of effects and plugins to use, but a general approach to mixing, i.e., track cleaning, phase correction between tracks, setting up buses and groups, rough mix, applying EQ and compression, then using automation, etc.

Yeah I asked the same on another thread. I love the lo-fi approach but this sounds like a fairly easy thing to setup and it would help so much!Danny wrote:Michael,
While we are on the Taxi TV topic, is there any reason why you can't go direct with the audio that you play on the episodes?
It just seems that with all of the technology out there, the music can be directly injected into the video feed.
If you already spoke about this, pardon the question. I must have missed it.
Most of the time I have no idea of how the showcased music actually sounds mixing/mastering wise..

Sonora,
Yes. You are right. I would just be happy with hearing the bass track and frequency range.

What I Would Really Like to See Here
Have an episode where a Screener assesses 4-6 listings Rock, Latin, Vintage 80s,Sports, Lullaby and Hip Hop
Although each listing states what is asked for, have the Screener ask What I Would Really Like to See Here is...................
Then go through their feelings and thought processes that would have them forward the submission
What I Really Want to See Here is this.....If I hear it is going through

Hi Michael - you've had some great people on to share mixing tips. How about somebody that really knows how to get that big, current pop sound in songs like Roar, etc. and can give specific tips. I know you can't play copyrighted songs but maybe the speaker could talk about tips and tricks for getting the sounds in specific chart topping songs and we could take notes and then go listen to them. I'm looking for specific things beyond the basics.
Never miss a show. I love it!

Hi Michael,
You read my comment last week on Taxi TV regarding "how not to waste people's time" and I wanted to explain it a bit better. You have tons of tutorials on the basics - but what are some things you and others are seeing that "waste your time" a little - not big enough to put a whole tutorial out, but the little things that may not be common sense. All Stars Pet Peeves if you will.
Thanks!

How about a show featuring recordings done on vintage gear?
Being one who started out with the TEAC 1040S 4 track, what one would do to squeeze as many tracks out of that as possible was always a fun challenge! It made me appreciate my next machine Fostex 8 track and Atari ST sequencer, then on to the Roland VS1680. AND now I await my new PC coming, ready to dive into the DAW world..I am just blown away as to what we have at our fingertips now!
Would be fun to hear others' vintage recordings...what we did to come up with our final mixes...each recording could have notes with it from the composer describing the process and machinery.

As much as I enjoy researching vintage recording techniques and gear, I gotta say that the best reason to do it is to see how we got here, today, and why we use what we use now. Now is the only time that counts; don't stop thinking about tomorrow, but use today to get there.

Re: Ideas for TAXI TV Topics
I suppose it's not possible to have someone paint a picture of what happens after a track is forwarded... how many more 'gatekeepers' a track might go through before it's chosen to be signed, and then, what it might go through in order to be placed. I'm sure all kinds of things occur in the audition process and not being chosen often has less to do with the value of the track and more to do with the 'cooks' that are producing the shows that need music and what they ask of the music sup or editor, how often scripts change or 'wants' change or shows are dropped or new directors come in and do a clean slate, etc.

Vikki,
Good points. I often wonder the same thing.
From my experience with libraries, they either WANT your track or DON'T WANT your track. There is no "Hold box" for possible tracks that may be used in a few years.
Again, that's my personal experience.
