Re: My latest beef.... WAIT! There's more.
I was writing my last post while Southpaw & Mazz had written theirs. I'm slow.On a side note. I was sleeping on the couch tonight while the Grammys were on. Something woke me up. It was The Jonas Brothers &.....Stevie Wonder?!?!?!?!?!?! WTF Stevie? What are you thinking? I mean, I understand you can't see how those hair dressers are messing up your 'do after all these years. I think everyone forgives that...You know, 'cause you can't see shit. But this? This? Oh yeah, I forgot. "I just called to say...." Hang on, I have to hurl in my pants. The best part was them calling out Stevie during the jam to play, like he was a peer.I've decided to become a booking agent. I'm gonna book The Jonas Brothers in Fort McMurray (look it up) at the Oil Can for a month & I'm gonna stay with them for the entire time. After that, I'll have to spend a lot of time at the rape crisis center/NA meetings helping with their recovery, but I'll put the time in. Trust me, I will. PLEEZE>>>> Don't anyone come on here & tell me about how hard they worked to get where they are.

Dear Wadely,I have personally worked my tired old ass off ta be able to read yo very lovely lovely tribute to Mr (that's Mista ta you!) Wonder followed by yet anotha damn sinus lavage when I got to the rest. Another hot tea spit-up episode!! So do not even start me up about when I can tell you how hard I worked, boo, I got the snot ta prove it! I'd offer to counsel those po lil boys post-trauma but after tonite, they on they own. Best thing that could happen to 'em, honestly. Talk about payin' dues!! A few years of that and even I might respect 'em. I'd agree with mazz except on this one teensy thang......Etta was outrageous, courageous and she had ta be, plus all the singin in bars where she had to really belt to be heard over the band/crowd, be deadly accurate and own immaculate muscle control without a vibrato until she decided when she wanted to have one. She din't lean on it like an old man's cane like some singers like bouncy. A vibrato is a tool, it can be an interesting one and it shouldn't be used to cover up pitch imperfections. Bouncy got ear monitors, she lip-synchs more than half the time. Where is the interesting part gonna kick in?But otherwise, what mazz said was really really good. I'd almost wonder what B would be like in a jazz setting if she'd jes lay off constant arpeggios, vibrato and flash. Sometimes a steady hand and digging deep is all a girl needs ta do ta get the point across.Dave W may now commence yet again with the refrain about gentlemen NOT startin their engines. Sorry Dave!

It does take a long time to work that stuff out, though, and to get to the point where there's nothing to prove, just sing the song! For some it takes longer than others!Time will tell.Peace,Mazz

She's 20-what? I mean, when does that kick in? If she'd been screamin in bars all this time, believe me, she'd be tired by now.Women do get weary. Heh.

(Or a boy) That's when a singer crosses that threshold and becomes a musician. It used to be a prerequisite, but I think the musicians just got tired & gave them way too much rope. It's like a border collie... I know, we have one. I love your writing style Squidly. It takes a few reads for me to get it, but it always makes me smile. You write with the New Orleans dialect. If you ever write a book, use that. People will eat it up.Wade

Heh.I think she's 27, which, even 20 years ago, meant that you should have your maturity with your craft in place. Well, at least to some degree. (And, that doesn't include going on Oprah.) Most of the people portrayed in the movie were in their 20's when all that amazing stuff was created. Why should we look at things differently now? Cut them some slack? I don't think so.

Of course, with all that I've said about Bouncy, I'd still like to examine her naked. (Just in case she reads these forums.)It's good to be drinking again!

(sigh) Comfy.I meant what I said in a good way. Honest!I just re-read some of these replys & wanted to add something.....Etta was around 23 when the original version of At Last was recorded, so this debate about life experience, years doing her thing & all that is a moot point. She was kicking ass as a very young singer. It's not about age; She, and many others of her ilk, had something that was priceless & immeasurable. There's no excuse for Bouncy... She's older now than Etta was when she recorded that song. I believe that in those days, and those times, Bouncy wouldn't have been strong enough to even get in the studio. Not just as a singer, but as a presence, I might add. (Maybe...Maybe... as a backup singer.)Having said that.... AGAIN...I'd still like to see her naked. Close up with the lights on.Just in case she's following this thread. Which, I'm sure she is.Wade
