If you're studio room sounds decent you shouldn't need a vocal booth. At least that's my experience. Unless you have outside noise issues, that's a whole other can of worms.

Of course you can use a closet if that's the sound you want.

Any major disadvantages for turning a closet into a vocal booth versus a corner?

I remember reading open rooms bounce sound different than closed (closet) - does anyone have any insight into this? Is it even that big of a deal?

The corner of a small room can be a bad place to record a vocal, because of the boundary effect. Basically this means putting a source (or microphone) close to a wall increases perceived bass, the intersection of two walls doubly so and a corner (intersection of three walls) treble. The point of least interaction will be about a third of the way into the room's center from any given wall.

A closet usually has a bunch of corners spaced pretty close to each other resulting in a lot of reinforced bass frequencies that may or may not be helpful to your situation.

If you think about it, I suppose most acoustic instruments use a wooden box or a metal cylinder of some sort, why not a voice? A small closet would make for a large violin sound box, guitar box, a saxophone, a tuba ... I suppose maybe a harp doesn't. A piano box might be larger than a closet, or pipe organ.
