pre submission cue feedback please

Post by bptmr » Wed Nov 29, 2017 9:32 pm

Hi Folks, I'm hoping for some feedback on this track for the listing below, I appreciate any advice on last minute changes as it's due Thurs night :)

John

ACOUSTIC-Driven, SINGER-SONGWRITER INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a great Music Library with a glorious and long list of TV, Film, and Commercial placements. They’re looking for Mid-to-Up-Tempo Instrumental Cues that would fit well on a playlist with the following references:

“5 Years Time” by Noah and the Whale https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-VOTcatok8

“From Afar” by Vance Joy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYUcqmpHJbk

“I Feel It All” by Feist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-iAS18rv68

Even though the references have vocals, they’re looking for Instrumental Cues only for this pitch! Give them well-crafted Instrumental Cues that rhythmically and melodically create an emotionally upbeat mood that would work for a wide range of sync placements. Your Instrumentals can range from very simple tracks with just a Ukulele, handclaps, and a whistle; to small acoustic-based ensembles; and all the way up to more fully-produced Instrumentals. As always, layer your instruments in and out as your Cue progresses to give it forward momentum, some dynamic interest, and prevent it from sounding repetitive or linear. You’d also be smart to avoid anything overly busy or frenetic that could distract from dialog.

All submissions should be at least 2 minutes in length. Solid edit points and buttoned/stinger endings are strongly encouraged. Please do not copy the referenced music in any way, shape, or form. Broadcast quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine).

They offer an EXCLUSIVE deal. You’ll split all upfront sync fees 50/50. They’ll get 100% of the Publisher’s share, and you’ll get 100% of the Writer’s share. You must own or control 100% of your Master and Copyright. Since this is an EXCLUSIVE deal, please be sure the material you submit for this pitch is NOT already signed with any other Libraries or Catalogs. Please submit as many Instrumental Cues as you’d like online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a Yes/No basis - Short Critiques only. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59PM (PST), on Thursday, November 30th, 2017. TAXI #Y171130SI

I'd definitely submit this. It sounds like Vance Joy himself wrote it! The guitar in the first 11 seconds initially sounds a little rough (tinny, perhaps?) but then you get right into it, building in each stanza, and I was immediately hooked. I don't know if that first portion borders on "repetitive," as the listing cautioned against there, but because you're so dynamic in the build (to my untrained ear), I was never bored with it. You're also under the constraint that you can't cut out that first portion without going under 2 minutes.

I vote thumbs up. Let us know how it turns out and if you submit?

Hi there, I think its a nicely composed track. Well done.

I have a couple of tweaks

The lower mandolin sounds a little high in level in places, you could even it out more.

You could pan your instruments wider. The acoustic has a wide spread but a lot of the other instruments are a little on top of one another.

The drums need to come forward a little more when they come in later. Levelling the mandolin may help there.

Really enjoyed it! Lots of energy.

Maybe drop the mandolin back a bit.

Good luck!
Mike
