PhilRey wrote:I totally agree on the "silence therapy". Not sure about the cheap thing though.. there is good, and bad.. like it always had... (I hear a lot of very good stuff regarding pop for exemple, very creative these days). Sad though that this is not what we usually are "forced" to listen to in shops, restaurants etc...

I agree that what is insane, is this sort of totalitarism of music in our society.. shops, trains, restaurants, elevators, etc... You can't barely go anywhere downtown without being exposed. Definitely a kind of polution. This is definitely not ok for me (and it's sometimes awefully loud!). You should have the choice (like with cigaret for example). But you don't. I'm like you, I hate this, it's physically painful, and most of the time I have to stay outside the shop when shoping with my wife, which is not cool obviously.. Or I use earplugs...

What I also notice is that this over exposition to music is mainly about "cheap music" as you call it, not with various genres. Always the same kind of main stream harmonies, rythms and frequencies... Very annoying. Mainly when we have so much good stuff outhere !

We are definitely not a society of "silence". Less and less unfortunately. I observe that silence (like emptiness) scares most of the people. Mainly young people. But I also remember a time as a teenager when I was listening to music 24/7. It was litteraly feeding me, as essential as oxygen . So I try to be compassionate, but not sure though how what I am "forced" to listen to in these shops feeds anybody nowdays... it has more to do with a sort of subliminal mantra that is supposed to put the majority of people (which I'm definitely not part of) in a good mood, so they buy more... ? Or maybe it has to do with a sort of auditive hypnotism... Or simply basic familiarity, you feel like "at home".. (omg).. And yes, for the majority, silence is scary. Definitely very uncounscious programs runnning there, to the benefit of consumerism...But also a dictatorship, that I'm definitely tired of.

I imagine spending a day downtown without music, nothing, just the sounds of life... That would be something (and it's crazy/scary to think that it would be exceptional when it should be just "normal"...).
I love what you said...and HOW you said it!! And I agree.

My silence experiment happened after I'd been a working musician for a long time (but still in my 30's) and had many experiences like ringing in my ears after nights of sitting too close to the cymbals (I discovered that snapping off True cigarette filters and stuffing them in my ears was my only, partial, relief) or suffering through one of Neil Merryweather's Space Rangers rehearsals and ear-splitting guitar levels, etc. etc. Yes, the silence was kind of scary at first! Nowadays, I'm noticing that I'm a bit freaked out about the silence in this Del Webb retirement community I live in after leaving Los Angeles for Arizona four years ago. In L.A. people are out and about at all hours...but in bed by 8pm around here!

You're mean :-)

I'm old, but my hearing tests were SO good that it freaked out my doctor and he couldn't stop talking about how he'd never had a patient that could hear this well. We have a few leaf blowers around this retirement community, but everyone has rocks instead of grass to mow. Maybe you should move to the desert!!

 I'm mean? what about that young people, especially young men on psychiatric drugs comment, lol?
leaf blowers are dangerous, our neighbor lady fell down the stairs after dusting her deck with a leaf blower, she sort of went down hill ever since and now is selling her house and hopes to move in a retirement living community. I live in the tall grass prairie region of the country, however the laws have height requirements and restrictions to maintain an English lawn, lol! Maybe the neighbors should all move to England, rofl!

I was just thinking this morning as I woke up to the sound of a lawnmower that I truly despise living in suburbia Thursday and Friday are the worst because everyone has to have their yards nice and tidy for the weekend. I live in a neighborhood mostly populated by retired military, so those decades of being forced to march straight, stand straight, salute perfectly, clean everything, everything in straight lines, etc... this all gets reflected in their yard work. I have one seriously OCD neighbor that trims the edge of his grass with scissors... not shears, but actual scissors. And he has a 4" wide trench between his yard and his neighbors so that their grass doesn't mix with his. :)

Once the kids get out of school, my goal is to buy 50 acres somewhere in the Texas hill country. All I need is electricity and a good internet connection and I will be good to go. :)

Are you being sincere? You ended a marriage over TV and sports?

Reading comprehension much?

1) Got addicted to silence after my experiment.

2) Then got married and that was the end of the "silence".

  there is an upside to the city and suburbs, people generally don't bug you to death if you want to be left alone, unlike
the country where people are always dropping by.
