komplete 11 drive sizes

Post by lesmac » Sun May 06, 2018 4:25 am

Hi I'm upgrading the studio. I have purchased Komplete Control S25 with a view to upgrade to Komplete11 [maybe Ultimate} when there are some sales on.

I picked up a 1TB Evo 850 for samples and I am wondering what size drive to get for my OS and applications. I figure the 250gig drive I have at the moment wont be enough. A 500Gb drive is going for about $200 Aus.

Any recommendations for the OS drive, 1TB or 500Gb?

Is the software delivered on a drive?

Sorry if the questions seem lame, I feel like i have OD ed on research lately. Really excited about Contact though. :D

Hey Les

I run a 256 GB system ssd. By moving my logic factory content onto one of my sample SSDs the size is fine. But I don’t store anything except for system stuff / OS X.

If you want to “future proof” yourself might as well go for 500 GB.

IMO any SSD with a 5 yr warranty is good for a system drive. Another 850 EVO would be a fine investment.

Sure you can save some bucks by going with a SanDisk or Crucial drive that has a 3 yr warranty but I have found that the warranty period often equates to how long you can expect it to last before it fails (just beyond the warranty). Only somewhat joking.

So for me 5 yr it is.

It’s such a pain to replace that kind of system stuff and rebuild. Ugh.

Good luck!!!

Re: komplete

They used to supply only the ultimate version on a drive. It’s only to enable easy install though. You have to have another drive to move the samples onto. It was that way when I got KU8.

Download speeds have increased since then though - and I am not sure if they even sell the drive anymore with the boxed versions. When I upgraded to KU11 all the content arrived fairly quickly via downloading from the NI site.

At any rate - KU11 is about 400 GB +\- so you will need at least a 500 GB ssd just for hat which will fulfill your 75-80% full rating max for a well functioning SSD.

Probably better to get at least 1 TB for KU.

Hey Andy, thanks for dropping in on this, I was hoping you would.

I was a bit confused about where to put the application and its size.

Anyway, to cut to the chase:

I ordered another 1TB Evo for the OS and I think I got the last one on special for around $330 US!

NI Kontact upgrades can come in a boxed set. You just go through the motions of making a purchase on their website and the drop down options indicate how it can be delivered. That's great cause I only have 50GB per month internet data.
I also had to purchase a whole bundle of ram to bring me up to my max of 48GB on the 2009 quad core. I had already upgraded with 8 gig sticks from 16 to 32 a couple of years ago [should have maxed it out back then ] but it looks like the bundle needs all the ram you can throw at it [Ive already checked out some purge tweak videos etc..] so I got 3 x 16GB.

Just thinking as I write, the whole process might be easier if I get that other pci bus adapter and pop the two new drives into that. [got to STOP spending ..got to STOP...........]

Thanks again for sharing.

Yeah the PCI angle works great.

Install the NI plugins on your system drive, and the content can be put anywhere as long as you tell the plugins where you have it located.

I dont run an ssd for the system, but got one 1tb samsung for samples a year ago. Its full, and I need more. Remember you need some headroom space on the drives (10-20%). Just to say, get as much space you can afford, as things are getting bigger all the time..
