If you're 65 then you lived through a whole lot of musical eras. the 50s music, The English onslaught the BEATLES STONES KINKS DONOVAN years The mellow folk singer era with Joni, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Crosby Stills and Nash etc. DISCO Hard Rock Led Zeppelin.
NEW WAVE Flock of Seagulls Duran Duran,etc. Reggae, All that stuff and more
Think of how much you have to draw on.
Some people get stuck in one era and never leave

Today 17 year old is in tune with their era and have a whole lot more musical tools at their disposal....making it easy to sound today modern

While we would all like to write hits that the world would sing and buy, I think that you would be writing no matter what. Making something out of nothing.
Mix up a hip hop beat with a folk song,
Most of all have fun being a songwriter

LOL - simply put - a 17-year old doesn't have much life-experience from which to draw; so, by default, they ARE contemporary in their own perspective;
as the target Mojo identified... tween girls.

Taylor Swift was a huge success writing Country songs to her peers. Now, with a successful crossover-to-pop career... at 28 she's 'an old woman' to a tween girl;
nearly old enough to be one's mom! Yet - she manages to stay relevant, which may be the more important element to songwriting.
So... just make sense of what makes sense to you.

If you manage to channel your 'inner 'tween girl'... well, you just may have a shot at writing a current hit Pop song!
I keep hoping Big Band music and REAL Country will have their own Renaissance.

an old post revisited. Today I am wondering if it's that people peak in their area of expertise or occupation. that might help explain a lot. It seems that people in a job rut for too long become reluctant for change, peak in production, so you make them a supervisor
and hire a younger workforce.

being a kid? now he wants to become an adult.

that reminds me. how do you know if a kid is imaginative and creative? They play with the package the toy comes in. How do you know if a kid is a genius? They're bored with a toy after a couple of hours. How do you know if they might be retarded? They are still playing with their first toy when they are 17!

late to the party. I am 69 I get all of my ideas from things I hear strangers say and do. I also listen to my grandkids, especially the 13 and 14 year old girls.

I find the lyrics of most of my peers and myself very boring. I lose interest very quickly. Nothing there that wants me to listen more. Also the melody lines are often without change etc. I also find the lyrics way to wordy. Yes they have to tell their story, but holy carumba???

I am still writing and producing, but I can see the end coming. Hope the one graddaughter Grace will keep me interested. She plays and records her own songs. I had a guy tell me he has written all his life and said one particular line she wrote was better than anything he had ever done. ha ha
