you're situation motivated me and I've put some things on the backburner so I can play "backup catchup" the rest of the afternoon.

Time consuming? No doubt. You've got to set up the copy job and then leave it overnight, sometimes longer, to back up a couple of songs. On the other hand, it's $0.10 to store a GB for a month, which is at the very least comparable to the cost of buying, maintaining, and replacing external harddrives. Not to mention that you've just offloaded the headache of drive failure and replacement to somebody else.

Man that'll make you cry... I had a similar experience just before Christmas. I was fortunate enough to lose about a 50 hours of work and recovery took me many days. I missed the deadline for the best fit I have seen for many instrumentals as well. I'm backing everything up to an external Maxtor 500 Gb drive and also saving session files to DVD. The Maxtor saved my bacon. I sure feel for you Dave. Wish I could be more help. Kitz

Re: Urgent - Lost All Of My Recordings!!!
Dear god bro... As bb said, my stomach sank. I just had flashbacks to the moment this happened to me. It wasn't my compositions and masters though. It was all my pictures and videos from Iraq, my entire music collection and dj playlists, business files and documents etc.. In my case i had 2 externals which, the first one, my iomega, (which is crappy brand i will never buy from again, by the way) my dog knocked over onto the carpet and everything was gone.. My second one, a maxtor which i had everything 'double' backed up on, also fell and never worked again... (by some act of GOD, for some friggin' reason i was standing next to my glass table whitch had my mbp and HD sitting on... i heard the shatter of glass and looked over...and my glass table spontaneusly shattered!... Im still baffled.. ANYWAYS i feel for what your going through) Their was a happy ending to my story though, i remembered i had bought and setup an unlimited online storage account with mozy.com i called mozy up and they told me i could download all my stuff from their servers. It took about a week to download, and a month to unzip everything and transfer it back in the right place. But luckily i was able to recover. I am so glad i setup an account with them a while back, and for 4.95 a month/unlimited storage per computer.. It was set on auto charge/monthly and auto backup so i didnt have to do anything and it automatically backed up everything from the folders i specified when i set it up.But anyway, i checked data recovery services and i got the same kinda quotes $700-2500 no guarantees.. Im not a computer tech, however it sounds like unless you secure erased and completely zero'd out all the data.. which is usually an option you have to manually choose.. Your files, might still be floating in cyberspace somewhere, and a tech might be able to use the command line/similar to find them.. Are the hard drives damaged themselves? It didnt sound like their was any damage to the disc itself which is a very good thing. In my case there was apparently damage to the disk itself, as oppsed to - say a part of the casing or fans, etc, but if you just reformatted with the standard option... I wouldnt lose hope.. I would call the manufacterors tech support line of your HD and of your computer and explain what happened first and foremost. Then do a little research online to see what you find, there might be some answers or simliar experiences you find. Hang in there, let us know what happens..

Re: Urgent - Lost All Of My Recordings!!!
David - looks like you have had some great info already posted here. I don't have anything to add other than add some words of encouragement. I'm pretty confident you will be able to recover but it may cost some dough (hopefully not too much!). I keep hearing that data on hard drives is never really gone, once deleted or even formatted, just repositioned. These data recovery services are like magicians so hopefully they can help you. I've been getting my act together on backups but as of now I could easily be in the same boat as you any minute. Good luck with this David,Rich

Re: Urgent - Lost All Of My Recordings!!!
First - thank you all for your kind words and support - it really means a lot to me. Just a quick update - I spent all night trying out different recovery programs, and so far have only been able to recover maybe 2% of what was on there. Haven't given up - trying all options before plunking down a huge hunk of change at a data recovery service. Keep your fingers crossed!!!Isn't just amazing though, how you can be so good at backing things up for years, and then it only takes one minute of stupidity to lose it all. I guess the lesson here is to take your time and think things through - no matter how much of a rush you may be in.Best,Dave
