Current snare and kick drum?

Post by CTWF » Mon Oct 14, 2019 7:03 am

Independent of the composition/production, do the snare (from 0:30) and the kick drum (from 0:40) in this track sound current?

The target use would be Urban/Trap/House/EDM - or is the question wrong, because it depends too much on the genre?

Background: I am struggling with sounding "contemporary" and "current" enough in terms of instrumentation. If there is
a magical bullet (sample pack, softsynth), tell me, and I might buy it. But my feeling is that this is not an issue of the
sample set, but more of the choice of sample and of my FX choices (compression, EQ, reverb...).

Any other comments on the track are welcome, too, because I am also struggling with the melody synth choices I make... :(
This is supposed to be "Deep House".

I'm not real big into EDM, but the snare choice sounds right for the genre (and it does matter), it just needs some beefing up.

Hey Dave,

thanks for commenting! Sorry for having to ask, but do you mean the level by "beefing up", or something else? At the moment, this is an 808 sample with a 3-band compressor on it, where I maxed out high and mid band, but left the low one out (if that makes any sense to you). No reverb or EQ.

Thanks,
Tom

It could be just the volume level in the mix. Try that, or experiment with EQ and compression also. At 0:40 it really sounds more like a tin metal percussion instead of an 808.

Magic bullets: Output Exhale. Mantra Drumkits (pop). Certain things from r/drumkits (mostly for trap).
