still a worktape mix... not for a listing... just fun

Post by funsongs » Mon Feb 03, 2020 11:50 am

in development: Bluegrass/Gospel
...I'm still thinking it probably needs a real upright bass (to replace the electric P-bass) to sound full and authentic.
:? 8-) :P

Hey Peter

I have listened to this song before - was it then without the background singer and with less instruments? Anyway - I like it, and that comes from someone with an essentially entirely scientific world view! :) I guess you are aware that the mix needs a lot of work (my understanding is, this is your pre-mix version and someone else will mix it in the end), but because of that, the bass is not very audible. I do think it should play a bigger role and I believe that in a clearer mix it will automatically do so. I am sure a proper contrabass would sound great on it!

Tom
Yeah - it's a re-worked worktape and mix - which I direct in person. The swapping out of a live upright bass should smooth out most of it.
I've just ordered the purchase of a Kala U-Bass/fretless - and MAY attempt the part on my own. If I can't pull it off, then I'll have to HIRE THE PRO.
Thanks for the ears & feedback, Professor. :? 8-) Or, is it just "Tom - The Science Guy"...? :)

PS - it really makes a difference... that is... it sounds very different depending on the listening device, I've discovered.

It sounds totally different on each and every device! I would say, no single device I use is decent, but if it sounds okay on all the crappy devices I have, it is getting closer to in fact being "okay".
:lol: :roll:

I do also listen to worktape mixes on several sources, with big differences - besides the 2 different brands of monitors at the studio;
1) JBL 305s studio monitors at home - pretty 'flat & true' - with almost no sex appeal or added ear-sweeteners - low, med, up volume.
Occasionally even a mono mix - reveals much.
2) After-market cheapy ($35) Logitech computer speakers w/ mini sub - actually sounds pretty decent; surprisingly.
3) Shure, Sony, Focusrite headphones - each with their own bias;
4) ear buds - they have the most bass, strangely enough... this worktape mix has plenty of bottom end, and you wouldn't know there was any lack.

In other words, it's easy to be fooled. Due diligence is a must... but, then - Soundcloud's processing aint rocket-science-worthy, either. :? :shock: 8-)
Right, Professor?

Thanks for the listen and comment. Word-to-the-wise: never take a funsongs Bluegrass song too seriously. :? 8-) :P
