Mixing low end - feedback needed

Post by TheElement » Thu May 28, 2020 1:54 pm

Hi everyone,

This is the drums and bass part in verse one of a song I will be pitching to artist. I am working on the low end but my room has no acoustic treatment and I have no sub. So its hard to gauge the sub level in the mix.

If anyone would be able to take a listen and give some feedback that would be much appreciated.

Is sub bass too high in mix? also I hear some clashing on two notes with the kick and sub but will get rid of that using Trackspacer. Anything else?

Thanks for the help!

This is the clip: https://soundcloud.com/elementproducer/ ... rackspacer

Does not seem too loud to me. Listening on AKG 812 headphones that supposedly go down to 5Hz. But then, who knows what my Yamaha keyboard through which I run it does to it...
I think I hear the "clash", but that does not seem too bad either.

Thanks for checking it out. 8-) Yes little distortion on two kick hits. frequencies clashing a bit. dynamic eq should be able to fix.

Hey Gavin!
The kick could use a little High Pass, it "fluffs" my Sub.
By "fluff" I mean it doesn't give a distinct note but instead washes out the sub.
Not by much though, you are very close
Cheers

Just listened a third time...
The kick is the trouble spot as the bass' subs don't distort my speaker
The two of them together are pushing too much air out of the sub
Take the low that you dig about the bass and cut it from the kick????

Hey Cass, I finally got Trackspacer working. Uploaded a new clip with it engaged. just drums and sub.

Do you think kick still needs eq or did Trackspacer fix it? Probably still need to eq kick but just interested to know if Trackspacer also took care of that.

Hey Gavin, now that I hear the bass by itself, it needs the slightest bit of High Pass/EQ as well, ever so slight to come through clean.
The kick was hiding the low bass in version 1
Now the kick is missing any depth...
I think the trick to those two sounds working together will be:
Don't High Pass the kick as hard as you did, get the bass where you want it as it seems you want to emphasize it, then sidechain the matching lows in the kick (with a multiband Compressor using the lowest band) so that you don't double up that range that hits me with the "fluff".
By using a Multiband Compressor you can avoid cutting any of the kick's higher EQ range, that way the volume can still appear to be loud and kickin'
You could do it the other way around as well, sidechaining the bass, just have to attenuate the double-up somehow.

Too much bass sub on this for me. Kick sounds a little light too. Bass level in general is too quiet compared to kick.

Why not side chain comp the Bass so you hear the kick on the attack and then the bass on the sustain?

Thanks Cass and Andy. Much appreciate the feedback! 8-)

I didnt HP the kick but used the Trackspacer which is dynamic eq. I'm going to try gating the kick using reverse SC and then doing a HP on the kick.

Then will adjust the Trackspacer on the bass. I just threw the Trackspacer on default. I need to get into it and tweak it.

I'll have another clip this weekend to listen to. :D

Thanks!

Thanks Andy. Are you saying Bass volume needs to come up compared to the volume of the kick? And kick needs to punch harder?
