Profanity and listing # S200616RB
So I'm confused here... this listing has three reference tracks that even the TAXI people deemed necessary to put the "parental advisory" sticker on ("WARNING: Some of the references have graphic and explicit lyrics. Listener discretion is advised.") in the actual listing... and indeed, pussies and bitches flying around. Yet a bit further down, there' s the standard sentence: "Please avoid lyric references to specific names, places, dates, times, brands, and profanity". So I'm pretty confused now... to make the "waffle recipe" (if you don' t know what I'm talking about, read the excellent recent TAXI interview, it is about "finding in the reference tracks what the client wants to hear in YOUR track, and treating the ref as a recipe" ) it seems it is almost REQUIRED to use some graphical lyrics, yet the listing also says we shouldn't... can anyone provide some clarity here?
CONTEMPORARY R&B SONGS with Male or Female Vocals are needed by a 5-Star Film/TV Music Publisher for a few (up to) $10,000 placements in a Popular TV Series that's going into its 3rd Season!
NOTE: Over the course of the next few days you will see several requests from this Music Publisher, as they are looking for a variety of R&B and Hip-Hop styles for this show and will be using TAXI as their primary source to find that music!
They’re searching for songs in All Tempos that would fall in the general ballpark of the following references:
WARNING: Some of the references have graphic and explicit lyrics. Listener discretion is advised.
"BELIEVE IT” by PARTYNEXTDOOR & Rihanna
“Toxic” by Kehlani
“B.S” by Jhené Aiko ft. H.E.R.
IMPORTANT NOTE: We’ve been told that the Music Supervisor of this show likes Songs that are "cutting edge, innovative, and ahead of the curve musically." They will be looking to break new artists and music with this show! If you want to grab their attention, give them something fresh and forward-thinking, yet still having commercial appeal.
Please submit well-produced Songs with a style and vibe that would fit on a playlist with the references above. Your Songs should have great lyrics, awesome melodies, and unforgettable choruses. Be sure your vocal performances are well-executed from start to finish.
Please avoid lyric references to specific names, places, dates, times, brands, and profanity. Do NOT copy the referenced artists or Songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed.
NOTE: The sync fee we were quoted is $10,000 for each of the placements; however, our experience tells us that this quote is probably based on the show licensing Songs from a well-known act through a big publisher like Sony or Universal. We think the sync fees could be lower for an unknown, independent act. We would “guesstimate” that the range for an unknown artist’s Song would be in the $2,500 to $5,000 range. It could go higher, we’re just being cautious and conservative.
This company offers an EXCLUSIVE deal, so please make sure the Songs you submit aren’t already signed to other libraries or catalogs. You’ll get 50% of any applicable sync fees, and you'll keep 100% of the Writer’s share. The Publisher will get 50% of any sync fees and 100% of the Publisher’s share. You must own or control your Master and Copyright to submit for this opportunity.
Please submit as many Songs as you’d like, online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by a TAXI screener who was handpicked by the Publisher. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59 PM (PDT) on Tuesday, June 16th, 2020. TAXI # S200616RB

Re: Profanity and listing # S200616RB
Reference tracks are there for vibe / tone not to replicate lyrical content. In general they can't use songs with profanity in TV shows and stuff. So if it's written with licensing in mind then leave it out from the get go.
Artists are different. They are making music for their fans and in some genres it's normal / expected. Many records that get made also have an alt mix that's a clean version where they either mute all the bad words or replace them so it can be played on radio.
Happens all the time not only in music but movies too, try watching Die Hard before the watershed on TV. Yippee Ki Aaye Kemosabe

Lol, too bad... so these beautiful lyrics will be lost for mankind...
Even if he has a big dick
he's still a prick
must have used a trick
to get a hold on my chick
Back to the drawing board!

Hmm... so this is actually about individual words, right?
I mean... if I replaced the "dick" above with "stick", the meaning would hardly change, but it would pass the filters? Or would "prick" also be on the list? I tried to google for some kind of a list of bad words, but couldn' t find it...

Yes..the 'bad'' ones
Yes you'd be fine with stick. There is nothing to say you can't use euphemisms...there's loads of songs that do that get played on the TV / Radio.
You couldn't use prick though.

Even if he plays it slick
Waving his big stick
She must be lunatic
To fall for his shtick
