9/10 forwards for Pandemic Project Tension Instrumentals!! :)

Post by MJLMusic » Mon Jul 06, 2020 11:52 pm

Good morning everyone from the UK.

I hope you're all well and safe.

I had amazing news this morning when 9 out of 10 tracks I submitted for this listing got forwarded (links below). I've also included the one that didn't get forwarded and the reason why to try and help others where possible.

Not Forwarded because: Consider the bendy synth and it's register. Because of its nature, it could conflict with dialog. Try an alt-mix without it and listen to hear if it fits the "wheelhouse". Also, lessen the percussion near the end to maintain the subtleness of the arrangement as in the beginning.

Brief

A whole bunch of Sci-Fi, Lab-Style TENSION INSTRUMENTALS and/or Cues are needed for “pandemic projects” by a successful Music Library with tons of Film and TV placements.

This company is proactively stocking up for the onslaught of TV shows, feature films, documentaries, and cable news specials being written now and going into production when the “all clear” (or mostly clear) sounds. As you might imagine, there will be a boatload of these projects coming up, and that means this company will need a hefty stash of music to satisfy the demand.

Please listen to the following references to get in the general stylistic ballpark of what they’re looking for:

"Bat and Pig" by Cliff Martinez

Plague Inc Evolved

If you really, really want to be at the top of your game, watch all these movies and TV shows, and take notes when your hear music! It will help pass the time while you’re cooped up, and you’ll be a pandemic-music-making genius when you’re done! Seriously, do it now, and tell your family to leave you alone because you’re “working,” lol!

Please submit well-crafted Sci-Fi, Lab-Style Tension Instrumentals and/or Cues that would work well in scenes where scientists in white lab coats are working ‘round-the-clock looking into microscopes and Petri dishes trying to come up with a world-saving vaccine. We’re not going to tell you how to compose these, but you might try experimenting with a very subtle (soft, muted, no top-end) percussive, mildly arpeggiated approach and some pulsing synths. Add some unsettling tension, and voila!

You’d be smart to stick to a singular motif throughout. Your goal is not to score the film or show. They’ve already got somebody to do that. Your job is to create music that editors can fly into a scene, and it works well because it doesn’t go through the changes that a score likely would!

If anyone has any further feedback, comments or improvements I would love to hear them.

Have a wonderful day!

Martyn

Nice work on those Martyn and thanks for posting these. I only got 2/7 through with most tracks having a complaint about abrupt endings - will have to try the bass/cymbal hit method. What are you using for synth and swells/hits?

Hi Sam,

Thanks for taking the time to listen. Most of the time it’s Gravity from heavyocity or rise and hit from Native Instruments for swells. Gravity for sub hits and synths I use my Access Virus Ti, it’s a fantastic synth for bass.

I owned a virus indigo for a short time. Decided to send it back for a set of Event monitors and some money toward an RME audio interface. Probably a good choice for where I was at the time. I got a few heavyocity sounds with a NI bundle and liked them, need to look into their stuff - seems to be usable. Thanks for the info!

HI Martyn, from the Peanut Gallery.
Might seem like an odd question, but - did you let the music lead you to the titles - i.e. naming them after you'd composed them;
or did you pick a title, and let it 'direct you' on how it should sound?
OR - none of the above?

(I find often a piece of music or song will guide you, or speak to you, what it wants to be... or is) :? 8-)

On these forums and TAXI TV, there's been much discussion about the importance of titles - for the mood & genre, as well as for ID-ing them to the library or end-user.
IMO - your titles are really good all by themselves.
Big congrats on the success & great-sounding tracks.

Hi Martyn,
Congratulations on so many forwards. Your tracks are very good and sound spot-on for the genre.
Out of interest, have you heard back from the library yet with an offer on them all? That'd be great!

Cheers,
Graham (Sheffield, UK).
Hi Graham,

Thank you for taking the time to listen. No I've not heard anything yet but really hoping I do, I had so much fun doing these instrumentals.

Hi Peter,

Really appreciate you taking the time to listen to the tracks.

Most of the tracks I named first, I find in doing so helps me keep on brief much more. I'll also have a scene in mind that I think it would work under, this can help with how much to layer/build.

On saying that there was a couple of those tracks that I started, totally forgot to name until the end and even realised that I hadn't saved the session since I started lol. Just got into the zone I guess.

Thanks,

Martyn
