In most cases, putting your music up on Soundcloud won't cause a problem in placing it. I think Michael was talking about the exceptions like a superstar artist, or a huge advertising campaign, or a blockbuster movie ... in those cases they could get picky about making sure the music hasn't ever been heard by anyone.
I have nothing against Soundcloud but so far I haven't needed it. I pitch my music through Taxi, or directly to the libraries I already have deals with. And if someone wants to link to a track, I can send them the Taxi webpage link.

Re: How long do you hang in there?
I've been a Taxi member since 1996. Does that qualify as hanging in there? For me it's about the education, the challenges, the camaraderie and yes - the opportunities. I have music in a dozen different libraries now. But I measure my success as much by what I've learned, and see the royalties as evidence and validation. God gave all of us 100%, and there are others among us who are immensely talented with their music (whereas my gift is a large dose of patience and perseverance). As long as I am still learning - I'll hang in there. I am in the processes of winding down my day-job business and will officially retire before the end of this year. Arthritis and two hand surgeries may slow me down (I'm a guitarist), but my love of creating music carries on.
