Sometimes things end up sounding similar without even trying. Nov 18, 2008, 1:43pm, aldicicco wrote:Hi everyone, ...Here's an instrumental called "You Shoulda Seen Me Then". It's not targeted for any current listing, so now seemed to be the best time to solicit your comments... It's here at www.taxi.com/aldiciccoBest regards,AlAl, I heard this melody in your instrumental song the first time I listened. But I couldn't put my finger in it. Then I was at a gig last nite & someone played the head, and it clicked. I think your song is great. The left hand piano playing is a bit clunky(too many 5ths) and I think would sound better if it was played & recorded at the same time as your lead, but no one else noticed. No big deal. Certainly didn't make it less musical, and I think it was a good way to mix your left hand comping, quieter. But you guys tell me, how close is the piano melody & chords of Al's song, "You Shoulda Seen Me Then" (from bar 5), to Pork Pie Hat, as performed by Jeff Beck in this clip from his Wired album from the '70s? I can't say this is any kind of infringement, and I don't care at all. I just noticed that they're really similar, BECAUSE OF THEIR BEAUTY!

I once wrote this beautiful melody, only to realize days later that it was the exact same melody as "All the Young Dudes". At first I was disappointed...but then I got really mad. I thought about suing David Bowie AND Mott the Hoople. Those #@$%&s stole my song before I even got a chance to write it!

You really copped the vibe on that one. Is that you singing also? Thanks Patrick...that is me singing. I'm not sure I got the same intensity out of my delivery as Linkin Park's singer did, but maybe in the ballpark anyway. The instrumental portion was relatively straightforward to "borrow" since most of its character comes from the tones & textures being used (particularly the ultra lo-fi piano in the intro); once I got those elements down it came together pretty quickly.André

That singer is an intense little bugger isn't he? It sounds like he's literally shredding his cords though ha ha. He squeezes more than me, but one of those guys that makes it work.

Other than in the depth of the bass/kick and that smoothly autotuned vocal, I'd say yours is an improvement on the original. The Linkin Park track is way overcompressed, too. Thanks mojo. I agree about the auto-tuned vocals...they're a little over-done. But with only one day to bust out the piece, they were the lesser of two evils... André
