Robert I had singing lessons for 5 years and if my pitch was off my teacher always called it intonation. Call it what you like but it sounded off..and I have a practiced ear for it.Robertj64 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 15, 2020 1:04 pmI think you have to be careful here because intonation is not the same as pitch. You said in your previous comment that the vocals were pitchy. That is very different. Pitch is precise and the note is either on or off. Intonation is the combination of pitched notes together. For example, I can sing on pitch each note but be off because the on pitch notes are not right with the key. It may seem picky but it does the world of confusion when offering feedback.

Re: Contemporary Enough?
I have had over 13 years of broadway productions and solo singing....I worked with large chorus, trios, duets, solos. I can STILL sing off-key which means I can make errors and admit it. I admire your confidence in that you do not make errors in this area. I guess the screener just forgot to mention the vocals.cosmicdolphin wrote: ↑Tue Sep 15, 2020 1:54 pmRobert I had singing lessons for 5 years and if my pitch was off my teacher always called it intonation. In my experience, screeners make a series of comments for returns, like continuously raising the bar. Once the first "level" is passed, you're stopped at the next level, which wasn't mentioned when you were returned on level-1 problems. I suspect it is a deliberate policy, not wanting to chase off people by returning for too many reasons at once, but it seems to be along those lines:
L1: MIDI-sounding and quantized
L2: not current/contemporary
L3: melodically not interesting enough / chorus doesn't stand out
L4: vocal performance
That's about as far as I got in a few months, but I suspect there are several levels after it. I expect to run into "mixing issues/broadcast quality" myself, soon))) I'd invite more seasoned forumers to add to this list.
And Robert, as you can see, vocal performance is a higher "level" than non-current, so it wouldn't get mentioned in a return for that.

Well, Zaychi. You cannot have it both ways. I could be wrong but if you look at when I edited the track....everyone here fixated on vocal performance and very few said anything about current/contemporary (after my track edit) comments. How is it that people on the forum fixate with vocals before anything else, miss the contemporary/current and the screener does the opposite? Besides, I have had another track come back at the exact same time, and the screener returned it for production AND the vocals pitchy (he tagged it). I think I have to stop taking all of you so seriously because sometimes things definitely do not add up.Zaychi wrote: ↑Tue Sep 15, 2020 3:27 pmIn my experience, screeners make a series of comments for returns, like continuously raising the bar. I am not saying that many of the comments are not warranted. What I am saying is that a lot of the feedback is as faulty as my own track.
