Re: Modern Synth Sounds
I think CosmicDolphin has it right: it's not just a matter of choosing a synth or a patch that's "contemporary". It's what you do with them, in both musical terms and production terms. They're all part of the artistic choices that get made along the way to reaching a finished track. If your artistic choices tend to sound dated then it's going to show through on the finished piece. If your mindset and approach are contemporary then you'll come up with modern sounding stuff, even if the synths weren't released yesterday. As a 40-something guy, it's an artistic trap I'm very aware of and I'm constantly battling.
I've come to this conclusion in a slightly painful way, having hoped to find that simply choosing a contemporary patch would be enough, then finding, ouch, that's not the answer. I've realised I've got a lot to learn about synth parts and production in modern music. It is a fascinating study though.
Cheers,
Alasdair.
