Thought I was on point what do you think?

Post by sol1 » Tue Dec 15, 2020 2:09 am

hi all,
I don't normally do this, but this time I really thought i did a pretty good job channeling Muse (which was referenced in listing) for this one! I'd love for you all to check it out. Here is song link:

Feedback for "Let The Healing Begin"
S201212AR

What I like most about this song
Cool laid back dreamy vibe.

I think you could improve this song by
This company is asking for uber energetic alt rock songs with killer guitar riffs and rhythms.

I returned or forwarded this song because
Let The Healing Begin is too languid and does not have the edge and force of the guitars and drums in the referenced songs.

Additional things I noticed...
Style
Style/Genre is off target with the listing request Mood is off target with the listing request Tempo is not within requested range Song length doesn't match listing request Not contemporary as requested
Composition
Intro is too long Melody could be stronger Chorus doesn't stand out enough Lyrics not universal Lyrics off target for this request Hook(s) requested in Listing not present
Performance
Vocals are pitchy Vocal performance off target for the listing Instrumentation feels stiff or over-quantized There are tuning, rhythm, or dissonance issues
Recording and Production
Song instrument sounds or samples sound dated or of a lower quality Recording/Mix needs improvement Not Broadcast Quality in context of this listing

Great Tune, Great Singing!
I get what the screener is saying, from time to time the kick and hats sorta hold it back a bit.
Not enough forward momentum in the verses (to my ears)
BUT.... You have a great tune and IT WILL FIND A HOME!
Don't sweat it too much, keep making these, try to do an albums worth and you will sign the collection!
Cheers

Hey Sol

Decent track, I will say though as someone who likes Muse and has quote a few of their songs on my Spotify playlist that it's not the vibe I'm getting overall.

The intro actually reminds me of Blue Savannah by Erasure, and when the singing came in it brought Keane to mind ( although they don't use guitars ) ...both bands I like BTW and have seen live.

I think the non-Muse issue started right from the off when you called it " Let The Healing Begin " as that is not a typical lyric that they would use. Their songs are often about corruption and paranoia..that darker sort of stuff..I don't feel like they are into the healing thing or would sing anything quite as poppy as this. Naturally you've produced music that reflects the lyrics so it doesn't have that punchy aggressive almost theatrical vibe I would associate with Muse or that darker more dangerous feel.

I so think it's a good track though, so keep it for something else - It may benefit from a bit more beef, it came across a little skinny like I was missing the bottom octave stuff so it comes over a bit lightweight. might just be a mastering thing.

Hope that helps, I enjoyed it but agree its off target.

Mark

Was this for the listing for the Chinese beverage company? They had Muse/Kasabian/DFA1979/Subways as reference tracks.

The vocals are pretty good. You have a good voice for this type of music.

I never listened to Muse, I always thought of them as Radiohead wannabees, so I skipped them. I liked the reference track though. The lyric does maybe seem a bit on the lighter side, maybe not edgy enough. All of the reference tracks except Muse are pretty dirty in vocal sound and lyrical mood.

My brother and I had a go at this listing just for fun. Didn't get the vocals down good enough to submit. My brother wrote an awesome guitar hook and cool lyrics but every time we tried to sing it, it turned into a freaking Kiss song. No good. So then we switched gears and started over and went in the Muse direction and ended up with a Radiohead type song which is pretty cool. Just couldn't get our vocals over the bar.

I think you'll be able to use this song for something, no sweat. And again, nice vocals.

You can either use the quote function or just address people by names/screennames. It's probably a bit of a pain to quote different people in the same post maybe, I don't know-- heck I don't think anybody will mind if you make multiple posts. It's your thread, my dude. :)

Maybe if Ted & Bro wrote a great track you guys should collab and get Sol to lay down a vocal on it

Not a bad idea. Probably on the particular track(s) we were working on, we're gonna maybe scrap them for parts, so to speak. But going forward in the future, my brother and I were discussing the possibility of looking for vocalists--maybe a few different ones, depending on style-- I'll have to look into how it works with sending tracks via remote collaborations, what the process and etiquette entails. If anybody knows of a good definitive resource --something like a primer on doing that, it would be awesome.

It's kind of a blow to the ego to say to yourself-- "man, no matter how many books on singing I've read or how many gallons of throat-coat tea I've chugged, I'm just not going to clear the bar on a vocal listing." But it's probably better to admit it and work on one's strengths.

I mean, hell I can sing! It just doesn't sound good. haha.

Thanks for giving it a listen Cass. Can you expand on the kick and hat verse feel? like it needs to be in front of the beat or different pattern(busier)?

thanks for the kind words too :)
