Is the voice on a demo important?

Post by burkeingraffia » Tue Mar 23, 2021 12:47 pm

If I am submitting a country song for another artist to perform, does it have to have a big twangy voice quality, or if it is a good song, can a producer recognize the song through the non-country voice?

My 2 cents - don't leave it to someone else to interpret your vision/idea. Make it the best you can afford. If you've got a particular artist in mind,
go to fiverr.com or airgigs.com or Nashville Demo Pros or Beaird Music Group (Nashville) - and hire the pro. You will be the beneficiary, if your lyrics & melody are 'worthy'.
Been there - done that. (except neither George Strait nor Alan Jackson have grabbed any of my songs yet.) :? :P

Demos these days have to sound like the real deal as i understand it. If you're pitching to established artists/labels you can be sure they are receiving demos that sound like something on the radio. That's your competition.

The more professional your demo, the more professional you will appear.

Nashville music producers are used to hearing great demos, usually from the great demo producers in Nashville. They will often recognize which local demo singer did the demo. Many Nashville demo singers will have, or have had, successful careers with their own songs.

But don't spend money getting a demo of a song that's not really ready. Use a rough demo and seek professional feedback on the quality of the song writing, do however many revisions are needed, and then you might want to invest in a great demo.

If its a modern country song, I dont think the vocal needs to be twangy, but it still has to be a great vocal performance. The bar is high in that genre, and the artists need to be inspired by the song when they listen.

Thanks y’all. My productions are all good, professional mixes, with good structure and lyrics (I think), but the timbre of my voice is not the big country voice (I get called ma’am on the phone a lot).

All of your feedback is so good. Thanks. Like many of you, I am trying to triangulate everyone’s advice while trying to leave the word “triangulate” out of my songs.

And funsongs, the fiver idea is great - I think that's a great way to go.

The right vocal will completely elevate a track , it's the most important part.
