More Sad Piano and strings
Seems like a lot of people are going for this one, what a miserable bunch!
Here's my attempt. The brief says modern, and I'm not sure that this is modern, although the piano reverb probably helps, the rest sounds a bit 1920s.

Production sounds really cool to me!
It seems to me like the strings are mostly texture/atmospheric for a long time, more like new age? Only opening up at 1:20... the ref tracks use them melodically from early on the track... that might be a weakness?

Thanks Zaychi,
You could be right about the strings being too textural. I find it easier to get an authentic sound if I steer clear of too much melody in the strings, but it is a bit of a cop out. I might try and get a bit of melody going on earlier.

Re: More Sad Piano and strings
Beautiful piece! Very lush and 'vulnerable-sounding' to my ears. I can hear that as an underscore to a tender night scene under the starry skies, or at a funeral in the rain. Sure. Having said all that...
IIRC when I listened to the ref tracks, I heard 4-bar phrases of 3 chords, repeated over and over. At least that's my take on the 'modern' sound. Your piece is a lot more active, despite the lulling vibe. Don't know if that matters

Re: More Sad Piano and strings
I would not think the ending would qualify as a "non-faded, buttoned/stinger ending" ?

Thanks Alan, there’s not a lot I can do to make this one more repetitive without changing the whole piece, but I will have a go at one following the 4 bar formula as I’m sure you are right about that being more “modern”
Cheers

Re: More Sad Piano and strings
Thanks Michael,
I guess it sort of stops on a definite chord with a little resolving bit before, that was my attempt at a button ending.
It seems a bit forced to stick a hard stop on the end of a piece like this
Cheers

Re: More Sad Piano and strings
This is a beautiful piece of music, I think it best matches the second of the three references provided in the listing. But the ending. not even close to a button ending The final A minor chord hits at 2:00... one option to clean up the ending is to let that measure remain for all four beats, then hit a nice low A on the piano or with a bass, and let that ring out for four beats, but no more.
Gorgeous writing!
