Me too: PIANO-Based underscore feedback requested

Post by rob3rto » Tue Nov 02, 2021 9:26 pm

I'm sure this will be a popular opportunity for passengers, and it will also be my first submission. If you listen to Dennis' submission in another post for this opp you'll hear similarities in how we keyed off the reference tracks. Thanks in advance for any input.

The direct track link wasn't playing for me, but it's the only one on my profile so far "Breezin": https://www.taxi.com/members/rOA4Z8YfQu ... ert-kerley

Quoting the Library: "We'd like to hear sophisticated, modern, pattern-based piano cues that are intimate, soft, and underscore-friendly. Structure-wise, make sure to both have a consistent composition and give the editors options to use ie: a dynamic section, build-up section, and more intense section. The key is to have different sections in terms of intensity, but NOT different in terms of harmony or 'new ideas.' Pianos often have quite a few resonances – so Dynamic EQs, Multiband compressors, different reverbs, etc. are very handy techniques to keep them from sounding muddy."

Please send well-composed piano-based Instrumentals that would work well as underscore for various scenes and scenarios. Craft your Cues around a singular motif/pattern, and create a sense of dynamics and forward momentum by layering instrumentation in and out as they progress. Your pieces can feature other instrumentation like strings, light percussion, acoustic guitar, etc., but piano should be the focus. Your production and any and all virtual instruments or samples you use should be super high-quality and modern.

TAXI Tip: Although this Company wants pattern-based instrumentals, please keep those patterns on the simple side. Remember, you're not trying to show off what an amazing piano player you are, so much as creating a vibe, feeling, and emotion, while leaving plenty of room for dialogue to be the focus.

All submissions should be about 2 minutes long, give or take. Good edit points and non-faded, buttoned/stinger endings are required. Do NOT copy the references in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, tone, texture, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed.

Hi Robert, and nice work on this piece -- I like the melody and progression a lot. The section at 1:03 does deviate from your established melody, though, and introduces a new idea, so the screener may call you out on that. Wondering if others would agree? It's sounding good overall, though.
Best of luck!

Thank you for the great feedback Douglas. That was on my mind as well and I've scored an alternate version in my head using the established progression. I was interested to see if others would pick up on that.

FWIW, I've posted an updated version that uses the same progression throughout.

The panning esp on the percussion seems a bit extreme to my ears.. unless you want it that way..
Sounds like you have an A-B form going on which seems to not match the request. Chop your track in 2 halves of only A and only B and make them separate tracks.. "singular motif/pattern" of course you'll have to figure out how to make the A into AA and the B into BB or whatever thru very simple developmental method..

Many thanks superblonde, I'll make some updates to the panning.

The description is a little at odds with the reference tracks, hence the reductive section. It's the same harmonic progression and theme intervallically, but I will play with it a bit and will have to decide which way to go. The input is appreciated.
