Rerecorded Dystopian Christmas

Post by Merryband1 » Sun Nov 21, 2021 10:59 am

On the advice of counsel ( :D ) (AKA my TAXI family!), I rerecorded Bring a Torch at a faster tempo. It now fits the 1'30" time frame. I also added some window dressing by way of Chorus, Compression, and RAUM. I think it sounds better now, and eerier. I look forward to your opinions!

Reference track: "Jingle Bells" by Myuu You should listen to this before my tracks, if you haven't already heard it, to give you a feel for the sort of eerie emotion I was trying to emulate.
Dark Bring a Torch

I'm reposting here in a new thread, rather than the first thread,
post595323.html#p595323,
because I wanted to make certain you all knew I'd updated the track, not just added a comment to the previous thread.

Thanks bunches! I'm enjoying listening to your tracks. I don't always comment, but I am just so proud of each of you and what you are accomplishing!

Great arrangement and performance. I think this fits the vibe.
One thing that occurs to me is that the tone of your track feels scooped with more high end, compared to the reference track.

Best of luck with this.

Nice performance and composition! However, I'm hearing some distortion at points starting at :37, so I'd recommend dropping your levels a bit.

Good work!

Thank you, Erich and Douglas! I'll see if I can't adjust the tone and also remove that distortion! This is why I love the Forums! You guys are great! I will post again after I fix the track, possibly tomorrow if I can't get it done by tonight.

Cheers,
Merry :)

PS I guess I remove the high end by putting a limiter on it??? I've been recording for years, but I'm still learning about mixing!

A limiter will put a "limit" on the dynamic range of the track (overall volume) but won't affect the frequencies (high end) really. The clipping can be solved by bringing down your fader levels for each individual track to make sure the levels aren't going into the red and causing distortion. Hope that helps! DK

Perfect, yes, thanks, Douglas! I haven't worked all that much with extras in my tracks since learning how to record, but at least it's easier to fix in digital than it was when I was a kid working with tape! I doubled the track so it would have more presence, but I think I overdid it a little! :D I may still keep both tracks in there just for sufficient volume, but turn them down. That should help, as will maybe dialing back a little of the upper registers in the EQ, too, to see if that makes a difference! :)
