Hip Hop Feedback

Post by Cale » Sun Apr 03, 2022 1:45 pm

Hi Everyone,

This one was a forward, but the screener's comment was "...using some better quality sounds would also help best fit this one."

I'm not sure if they're referring to the drums or the synths, so any feedback on the sounds I'm using would be helpful for the next one, thanks!

The bass aspect of the bass/kick sounds little muffled to me, I’d go with a more current 808 sound. “Urban Warfare” is an excellent and affordable 808 library. I think some of the synth sounds are also a little dated. For example, in the Doja Cat reference, listen to the crispness of the hi-hats, and the characteristics of the synth pluck theme. And the clap/snare is much more forward in the mix. In the “Man In the Mirror” reference the snare and hats are crisp as well, and there is not a whole lot going on. In general the references have a lot of space, and not a lot of musical activity going on. The gritty synth that entered around 0:40 doesn’t fit the genre, and the snare you switch to in this same section is probably what the screener was referencing. The initial snares you used were great, I would keep them throughout. And bring the hi hats more forward, hats are a major characteristic of this genre. Congrats on the forward!

Paulie, these are great observations and suggestions, thanks! I'm going to take a look at Urban Warfare for some better 808 options...
