Thanks! That helps a lot! Kind of you to be that comprehensive. My sense for these things is not well calibrated yet. So I'm going back to the sounding board and I'm gonna attempt to take your suggestions into account. If I manage to produce a track before the deadline (April 18) I'll post it here.
Thanks again for the feedback everyone!

Re: Seeking feedback on Instrumental Themes?
OK! Here is something very rough I put together. Is it on the right track?
This isn't the length I'm going for. It still needs lots of arrangement and more instrumentation. I'll probably add some keys, maybe a B3.
See the track titled "Borderline" under the heading "70s Funk":

Re: Seeking feedback on Instrumental Themes?
Hi Ben,
Your track sounds more pop than funk. Others have already pointed out the other issues but one advise from me listen to the guitar comping rhythm/style and sound wise it is more a punchy drier sound than with reverb.
good luck.

OK. Sounds like you guys and the screeners have very strict definitions of these genres. That's good to know. Thanks for the feedback. I listened to a bunch of 70s funk today and I was pretty sure that my track "Borderline" wouldn't have stood out in a funk playlist.
