ORCHESTRAL DRAMEDY INSTRUMENTAL CUES

Post by Margaret » Wed Apr 13, 2022 9:19 pm

I'd be grateful for any feedback on my cue Playing Innocent https://soundcloud.com/margaretkalb/pl ... l_sharing

ORCHESTRAL DRAMEDY INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a Music Licensing Company with a HUGE list of placements in Films, TV Commercials, and A-List TV Shows.

NOTE: This Company has signed lots of TAXI members over many years and nailed down lots of placements for them!

This Company is looking for Instrumental Cues that could be found on a playlist with the following references:

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (From 0:59 - 1:55) https://youtu.be/x4XWN5cohTY?t=59 (From 0:59 - 1:55)

RHOSLC Highlights S1 Ep6 (From 1:35 - 2:00) https://youtu.be/9vnwMR-VCKo?t=95

"Sneaky Snitch" by Kevin MacLeod https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3_Fh24AGBE

Please submit well-produced Instrumental Cues that set the tone for quirky, light, dramatic scenes in Reality TV shows. Your submissions should have solid motifs and high-quality Orchestral instrumentation. Please craft your Cues around a singular motif and mood, and create a sense of dynamics and forward momentum by layering instrumentation in and out as they progress. Be sure to avoid submitting anything that sounds too busy, as it could interfere with a scene’s dialog. Your production should be polished and any virtual instruments or samples you use need to be top-notch.

Submissions should be about 2 minutes long, give or take, and have non-faded, buttoned/stinger endings. Do NOT copy the references in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed.

This company offers an EXCLUSIVE deal. You’ll split all upfront sync fees 50/50. They’ll get 100% of the Publisher’s share, and you’ll keep 100% of the Writer’s share. You must own or control your Master and Copyright. Since this is an EXCLUSIVE deal, please be sure the material you submit for this pitch is NOT already signed with other Libraries or Catalogs. Please send as many Instrumental Cues as you’d like, online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI. All Submissions must be received no later than 11:59 PM (PDT) on Tuesday, April 19th, 2022. TAXI # S220419DD

Hey Margaret

I think your pretty much in the ballpark with this one, a couple of thoughts....

19s - The percussion instruments jump out a bit too much for me ( guiro ? )..I think they just need pulling back, maybe roll a bit of top end off and add more reverb to sit them back more

The core of it is good but once I'm about halfway through I start to feel like it gets a little repetitive. Maybe you could vary up the arrangement a little more , have a section where the pizzi don't play the melody but do it on a Glock or something like that, or try a call response where the glock & pizzi take it in turns before playing together.

I'd also like to hear a litlte more variation in the pizzi part, maybe have a section where you play at a much softer velocity and see if that helps add more variation.

This is really helpful, THANK YOU! Yeah, the guiro/ratchet thing was in the right ballpark to what I wanted, but not exactly right. I fiddled with it some more, and layered a new sample over it with more low end. It's at least closer to what I'd heard in my mind.

And I had the same repetitive thoughts, but then I bump into the issue of not getting too complicated, keep it simple, etc. I'm going to wrangle with it as you suggested to try and mix things up without getting distracting.

I will share v2 later. Again, thank you. Specific feedback like this is so valuable.

For what it's worth, I think it has enough variety. I almost hear it as a new motif for a bit starting at :37.

A good solution to that dilemmna is simply swapping parts to different instruments , so the editor gets new textures without the emotion of the cue being altered.

Some time ago a few members asked me to put a guide together about avoiding repetition, it's fairly simple stuff but it might spark a few ideas.

That's a B section starting at :37. I think I'd rather remove my eyeballs with a rusty spoon than try to turn only 8 measures of material into two minutes. Having an A and B gives me a lot more to work with.

This is a nice piece but it's too busy for the listing. The first reference is extremely sparse with only pizz violins and marimba. See how much you can take out and still maintain the quirky melody/harmony you have.

hope this helps,

Michael
