Another try at DRAMEDY

Post by irthlingz » Sun Apr 10, 2022 6:41 pm

Somewhat calmer pizz strings - thanks to Casey!

Took mainly the "Sneaky Snitch" ref as our guide.

Version based on greatly appreciated feedback from Matt, Mark and Paulie!

ORCHESTRAL DRAMEDY INSTRUMENTAL CUES are needed by a Music Licensing Company with a HUGE list of placements in Films, TV Commercials, and A-List TV Shows.

NOTE: This Company has signed lots of TAXI members over many years and nailed down lots of placements for them!

This Company is looking for Instrumental Cues that could be found on a playlist with the following references:

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (From 0:59 - 1:55) - https://youtu.be/x4XWN5cohTY?t=59

RHOSLC Highlights S1 Ep6 (From 1:35 - 2:00) - https://youtu.be/9vnwMR-VCKo?t=95

"Sneaky Snitch" by Kevin MacLeod - https://youtu.be/l3_Fh24AGBE

Please submit well-produced Instrumental Cues that set the tone for quirky, light, dramatic scenes in Reality TV shows. Your submissions should have solid motifs and high-quality Orchestral instrumentation. Please craft your Cues around a singular motif and mood, and create a sense of dynamics and forward momentum by layering instrumentation in and out as they progress. Be sure to avoid submitting anything that sounds too busy, as it could interfere with a scene’s dialog. Your production should be polished and any virtual instruments or samples you use need to be top-notch.

Submissions should be about 2 minutes long, give or take, and have non-faded, buttoned/stinger endings. Do NOT copy the references in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, tone, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed.

This company offers an EXCLUSIVE deal. You’ll split all upfront sync fees 50/50. They’ll get 100% of the Publisher’s share, and you’ll keep 100% of the Writer’s share. You must own or control your Master and Copyright. Since this is an EXCLUSIVE deal, please be sure the material you submit for this pitch is NOT already signed with other Libraries or Catalogs. Please send as many Instrumental Cues as you’d like, online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI. All Submissions must be received no later than 11:59 PM (PDT) on Tuesday, April 19th, 2022. TAXI # S220419DD

Whilst I think the arrangement has improved since the previous track due to being more consistent, the melody here just sounds like it was randomly generated.

I'm not a music theory guy but maybe someone who is can explain why it sounds so robotic, emotionless and random. I get no sense of any underlying chord progression or structure.

I'm not sure how you came up with the piece but you might want to reconsider your methodology.

Hey guys, I do think this piece has improved over your last dramedy piece, however, I'll ask you the same question I posed in your previous piece's discussion thread:

What mood were you aiming for? And do you think an average listener would be able to say, "ahhhh, that is clearly a ___ mood?". This is one of the most important questions you need to ask yourself every time you sit down to write music for TV. Always have a mood in mind, and stay laser-focused on nailing it. When I listen to this piece, I can't latch on to any emotion or mood, and again, this will pretty much kill the chances of getting music signed to libraries. Libraries want things to fit in predefined boxes. If they can't categorize it for easy searchability, it just won't make sense for them to sign it.

Also, as I mentioned previously, you'll want to address your reverb. Your orchestra still sounds like it's playing in an empty arena. Your reverb is HUGE, and should be much more intimate. And like I also mentioned previously, you tend to have different sonic spaces happening within the same piece. Notice how your orchestra sounds like it's in a different space than the cymbal, which almost sounds like the cymbal player or snare-tapper is sitting right across from you in a closet.

Lastly, can you imagine what the sheet music would look like for these poor pizzicato string players? It would be four bars of notes, followed by "repeat 100x". I'm sure these string players would want to jump off a bridge if they were real players. Gotta throw some variety in these phrases!! Octave up, octave down, strip out some notes, send the melody to a different section, drop it out completely, etc.

~~Matt

Too complex... and I can't tell what key this is in. Really try to keep it simple. Check out my dramedy tutorial and pay specific attention to my melody/theme. Very simple, very basic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlGRHvuGdW0&t=59s

Listening to latest version. That string plucking is WAY too piercing and would never work under dialog. Listen at very low volume. Can you imagine that under dialog? The best part of the track is the brass at 00:39. You may be better off basing the whole track on the brass playing the motif, throw away a lot of the rest, and just support it lightly. Caveat: I am not a cue guy, not a dramedy guy.

Best,
:D Casey

Thank you, Casey! Putting up a new version (in first post) with calmer pizz sounds.

I think it's just a poor choice of instrument even in the latest version. As I said before, the best part of the track is from 00:39-00:49. You may have something there. I'll let others with more cue experience chime in.
