Feedback on Dramady Cue TAXI # S220727DR

Post by bmoBauhaus » Tue Jul 12, 2022 10:46 am

I am curious if anyone has had success with these dramady cues? Mine is below, kinda plucky, sneaky and playful. I feel like the reverb might be a bit much but maybe I am overthinking it? Does anyone have any thoughts or feedback on it? My track below:

and THIS is the Taxi Ad:

Lots of DRAMEDY INSTRUMENTALS are needed by a very busy British Music Library that's constantly landing tons of placements in Film, TV, and other Media.

This Library is looking for a range of Instrumentals that could fit on a playlist with the following references:

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (from 0:59 - 1:55)

"Dark Comedy Central" by Jim Ellis

Real Housewives of Atlanta (from 1:25 to 2:08)

"Quirky Waltz" by Gabriel Saban & Anne-Sophie Elizabeth Versnaeyen

"Frenemy of the People" by Bleeding Fingers

Please submit well-produced Dramedy Instrumentals that could help set the tone in Film, TV, and other media placements. Your submissions can range from sparse and quirky to dark and sombre – to anywhere in between! Your submissions should have memorable motifs, solid arrangements, and polished production. Orchestral-based instrumentation that is generally similar to the references will suit your submissions best. You can incorporate some additional elements (like Hip-Hop beats), as long as the orchestral elements stay the focal element. Craft your pieces around a central motif, and create a sense of forward dynamics and movement by layering instrumentation in and out as they progress. We recommend avoiding anything that sounds overly busy as it could distract from a scene’s dialogue. Please be sure any virtual sounds or instruments you use are high-quality and modern.

Your submissions should be about 2 to 3 minutes long, give or take. Non-faded, buttoned endings with good edit points are needed for this pitch. Do NOT copy the referenced example in any way shape or form. Use it only as a general guide for tempo, tone, texture, and overall vibe. Broadcast Quality is needed.

Hey Brian

Whilst it's not a genre I major in I do have some signed Dramedy tracks out there, some of which have made it onto TV.

I had a listen to your track, I like the overall sound pallette but I think you were right to question the reverb - Everything feels a little far away and distant , it needs to come closer to the listener IMHO..so less reverb, more midrange to the mix possibly. It may be that some of the instruments have a distant and close mic option and you need to bring it closer for this ype of track.

My other main takeway is that it's too repetitive, it seems to have the same melodic part ( the first one we hear ) the whole way through , whereas I would have it max up to around 12-13s ..and I probabiy would have had it do something slightly different after 7s. Keep it mostly the same 2nd time around but change maybe 2/3 notes, it goes a long way to avoiding the dreaded repetition.

At 22s the Guiro is not rhythmically connected to the rest of track, I think it works as an instrument for Dramedy but it has to fit with the rest of it.

As the cue develops it feels like you just pile on more layers instead of giving us a B section - The B section doesn't need to be hugely different but it will give an editor more options to choose from.

I have a track on the Album linked below called Making Mischief, the publisher is pretty choosy and their are tracks on there from from Taxi luminaries such as Dean Krippheane ( writer of the excellent Demystifying range of books) and Dave Kropf of the 52 Cues community / YouTube Channel who really knows his stuff and you may have seen on Taxi TV recently. If you haven't checked out either of those guys I highly reccommend their work but take a listen to the whole album a couple of times then go back to your cue and you should get some new insight.

Hope that helps

In addition to the reverb, I wonder if it's overall too low in volume? The recommendation is generally to make sure it's at least -14 LUFS.

Also, minor point, you've misspelled "dramedy" in your tags.

Good feedback here already, definitely need to increase the volume. To me this sounds more like kitchy Muzak instead of dramedy. I think dramedy is a little slower in tempo, more sneaky or mischievous.
