About GRABBING SOMEONE'S ATTENTION (from your song)...
'spoze it depends on what kind of attention you want.
Using clever phrasing and interesting language can attract attention, IN A GOOD WAY;
while falling back on words that could be offensive to some - vulgar, or even casual street language could stand out in a NEGATIVE way.
Why take that chance? Some folks just don't like to use their ears for trash cans.

So sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I ended up in TurboTax Hell the last couple weeks. My brain is now mush. But thanks for responding. Being that the song was military based I was thinking in terms of it being possibly placed in a movie. I went back and forth and figured, in that context, using sh*# would be the more likely choice. Something had to hit the fan because it rhymes with Superman. Anyway, it doesn't matter now it was just rejected. Guess it is time to check what else is needed.

One thing to keep in mind with Film/TV music is music libraries prefer a track with which they can cast a wide net. So a song might be good for a specific type of movie but if they don't feel they can pitch it to other things--TV shows, other types of movies, etc., they generally won't bite. The exception would be if you see a direct to supervisor listing which is more specific. But even then, if the song doesn't work for that film or show, it may not have many other opportunities.

So my advice is cast a wide net. Remove obstacles where you can.

I was only addressing the question about profanity. Avoid whenever possible. As far as what a listing specifically asks for, it really depends. You have to read every detail. Some listings mention the lyrical content, others don't. But remember, if you tailor a song TOO much to a very narrow listing and it doesn't get picked up for that, it may go nowhere. Nothing wrong with that approach, just be aware and choose where you put your energy well. If you do all your own recording and the only narrow part is lyrics, it's easy to re-record with different lyrics. But if you pay for studio time and/or production, keep that in mind.

You can give that vibe by using appropriate instruments - Marching drums, horns etc. ..you already have the stompy part which is a bit like marching

You are right. It would help if you knew the scene. Without knowing the emotion needed behind the lyrics odds are good for a rejection , could be a parade, or battle. If it just says military not quite sure you could be lucky enough to get it right. Oh well Think I need to pay more attention to the samples when they offer them. I'm not very good at all the different genres. I never knew there were so many. I just figured stomp clap was pretty self-explanatory.

Browsing the thread and I'm reminded that Michael has mentioned - a few times, IIRC - that lyrics that are too 'on the nose' may not work as well as lyrics that merely suggest or evoke the ideas presented in the brief. I'm not a wordsmith myself, but I can imagine using a metaphor like 'the dogs of war' and constructing a lyric around actions and emotions we attribute to dogs; deliberately avoiding any kind of human sentiment or POV. Would that help to avoid telling a story that conflicts with what's in the film or TV scene? Just a thought, for what it's worth.
