Seeking Wisdom - Feedback - Americana # S231115UC

Post by johnnyrowing » Fri Oct 27, 2023 2:52 pm

I am seeking some wisdom/feedback on this track. I was thinking of submitting it for the Americana #231115UC. It is a songwriter rather than "artist" or "sync" pitch which is pretty much my dream. :) Anyhow, any thoughts are welcomed but wondering a few things, below.

1. The listing actually desires the "songwriter" to be the "singer". I assume if the singer stinks that desire would be out. :) As such, is my voice okay for this pitch?
2. The listing seemed to desire guitar and vox. So, I kept it really simple and straight. Any thoughts on the simplicity? Does it fit the listing's requirements?
3. I tried to channel the simplicity of the references but also the "depth" of the message/lyrics. I also tried to add in a few more modern "phrasing" touches but not go too far. Is this at all received by y'all as in the running?
4. "Unforgettable" choruses are desired. The references didn't seem to go too crazy in the chorus. So, I tried to not go too nuts. The "hmms" seem catchy/singable to me . . . but . . . I wonder what y'all think about the chorus.
5. I went with a more story/ballad structure and - due to time - avoided a bridge. The verses are a bit "extended" (to help pitch the story and there's some decent lyrics there. Is some of the non-normative decisions I am make here a crucial error?
6. The "What if she's an Angel" track has some Christian overtones. So, I wrote with this in mind. Plus, as the song centers around thought of the afterlife/heaven, I didn't hold back. I know this could limit the possibilities but I am hoping that for Americana that Christian audience would find it acceptable. Any thoughts on that?
7. Seriously anything else that I could receive from the forum would be appreciated.

Here is the track:
Just Gone Fishin'
https://www.taxi.com/members/Ef77nz5GSm ... ne-fishin-

Here are the lyrics:
Tell you what I know about Heaven’s lake
Yea, the beer stays cold and the take is great
And every day is a Sabbath day
Yea, you get up early and stay out late

Cause the sun won’t set to force you in and
Good times ain’t “if” they are “when they’ll start again”

So, just lean in and listen, and
You’ll know that dad ain’t gone . . .
He’s just gone fishin’

Hmm - No, dad ain’t gone
Hmm - He’s just gone fishin’
Dad ain’t gone - Hmm

And I bet we’ll find by Heaven’s shore
There’s a log cabin with a shingle on it’s door
Sayin’ “Every day is a brand new day,
for those with faith that the Lord has saved”

And, someday, I hope we’ll float
All together in that same sacred boat

Yea, just lean in and listen, and see the water start to ripplin’
And hear the splash of the line as it drops in
And know that dad ain’t gone . . .
He’s just gone fishin’

Hmm - No, dad ain’t gone
Hmm - He’s just gone fishin’
Dad ain’t gone - Hmm
He’s just gone fishin’

COUNTRY/BLUEGRASS/AMERICANA SONGS with Male or Female Vocals are needed by a Nashville Producer/Publisher who's pitching and working on Music Row!

They're searching for unique, hit-worthy Songs in all tempos that could sound at home on a playlist with the following references:

"Let's Burn It Down" by Tawnya Reynolds

"Carnival Song" by Jeff Black

"Where Can I Surrender" by Randy Travis

"What If She's An Angel" by Tommy Shane Steiner

Quoting the Client: "I am only interested in Songs with a single, solo writer (no co-writers). I would love to hear the writer singing them, but it is certainly not required. Guitar/vocal only demos are preferred."

They're not as much looking for polished, perfect productions, as much as they're looking for talented Songwriters with great, chart-worthy Songs! Your productions and recording quality still need to be clean, clear, well-balanced, and good enough to represent your Songs well. Mid-to-Up-tempo Songs are typically the most desirable in the Country market, but if you’ve got an awesome, career-making ballads, this Producer/Publisher wants to hear them!

Please submit top-tier Country/Bluegrass/Americana Songs with an authentic, charming sound and style! Your submissions should have catchy melodies, unforgettable choruses, and well-crafted lyrics. Guitar/Vocal demos are preferred, but more filled-out productions are also acceptable. Live instrumentation is suggested, but if you choose to use virtual instruments or samples, please make sure they are high quality and realistic-sounding. Confident and well-performed Male or Female vocals are the way to go.

Stripped-down demos and full productions are both okay to submit, as long as your Songs are great and your recordings are clean, clear, and well-balanced! Do NOT copy the references in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a general guide for tempo, tone, texture, and overall vibe.

IMPORTANT: This company is not just looking for a song or two from you. They’re looking to build professional, ongoing relationships with songwriters who are highly committed to working hard, and have the drive and ability to deliver a lot of super strong material.

The specific deal points will be handled on a case-by-case basis between you and the Producer/Publisher. You must own or control the Masters and Copyright to pitch for this opportunity. Please submit as many Songs as you’d like, online or per CD. Time permitting, an associate of the Producer/Publisher (who was hand picked by the Publisher and has been trained as a TAXI screener) will screen some or all of the submissions. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59 PM (PST) on Wednesday, November 15th, 2023. TAXI # S231115UC

Great hook! I know you wrote not too concerned about the religious vibe, but "Sabbath" might be a little much. Also, the vocal is very "in your face" whereas the references are more like someone sitting on the sofa across from you.

hope this helps.

Hi Johnny -

1. I would look for some way to lift the chorus energetically above the rest of the song.

2. I would drop "for those with faith that the Lord has saved", which feels more specifically Christian to me than anything in "What If She's an Angel?" Maybe "for those gone fishin' in heaven's lake" ?

3. Yes, great hook!

Wow, very nice, at first I thought David Munyon was singing here. For me, you convey more expression and feeling in this low vocal range than when you sing higher. However, I think that your lyrics are your absolute strongest suit and in this type of music it really shows. Will follow you from now on!

Hey Johnny! Dude, I think you nailed this one. I love this listing, and how it's looking for guitar / vocal demos that aren't necessarily polished, but show the song's potential and showcase the writing skill. I haven't seen a listing like this in quite some time - though, admittedly, I don't keep my eyes out for these things all that much 🤣

I love the resonance of your voice in those low notes as Andy pointed out.

I would agree with Michael that some of the lyrics veer perhaps too far to the religious side - he pointed out "sabbath day" specifically, and I agree. Maybe just try "Sunday" instead? "Sabbath day" seems too heavy-handed for me.

Love the sentiment of this song though, and think you presented it well. Got all my fingers crossed for you over here!!

"Sabbath" is better if you want to be more inclusive. "Sunday" excludes the "Abrahamic" religions (e.g. Judaism and Seventh Adventist Christians), which observe Sabbath beginning Friday at sundown and ending on Saturday at sundown. And in Islam, I believe Friday is the Sabbath day.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I've been delaying a response, as I know many are away for the Rally. :)

I'll be making many revisions based upon the thoughts shared here.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts.

Based on feedback here and from some songwriting friends - here is where I ended up.

First time responding to this thread - sorta glad I 'waited' until you employed some of the feedback for which you asked.
The results sound like a winner.
Might have to send you a PM...
