Requesting Feedback 70's hard rock track

Post by BradleyHagen » Thu May 16, 2024 11:49 am

Hi Folks! OK....Here is the brief:
Lots of '70s & '80s-Style ROCK SONGS with Male or Female Vocals are needed by an A-List Sync and Music Licensing Company with a very successful track record of placements in Film, TV, and Commercials.

This Company is looking for Mid-to-Up-Tempo Songs in the general stylistic wheelhouse of the following references:

"My Way, Soon" by Greta Van Fleet

"Getouttahere" by Super City

"Nobody Wants To Die" by Rival Sons

QUOTING THE COMPANY: "We're looking for some fun modern rock Songs that have their roots in classic rock of the '70s or '80s, but are new and fresh. I’m open to male or female vocals. Songs need to have been recorded in the last five years or so, give or take."

Please submit modern Rock Songs with lots of energy and a sound that is reminiscent of '70s and '80s Rock! Your submissions should have catchy melodies, memorable choruses, throwback rhythms, solid arrangements, and well-performed vocals. Instrumentation that is stylistically consistent with the references and similar tracks will work best, such as electric guitars, bass, drums, etc. Please be sure any virtual sounds or samples you use sound are high-quality and genre-appropriate. Confident, well-performed vocal performances are needed.

Lyrics should avoid references to specific names, dates, times, places, brands, and profanity. Please do NOT copy the referenced artists or songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a guide for tempo, texture, and tone. Do NOT submit any material with unauthorized samples of any other artists’ music, sounds, or any other form of media. Broadcast Quality is needed.

This company offers an EXCLUSIVE, 50/50 deal, so please be sure the Songs you pitch for this opportunity are NOT already signed with any other Companies or Catalogs. Any sync fees will be split 50/50 with the Company. You'll get 100% of the Writer's share, and the Publisher will get 100% of the Publisher's share. You must own or control your Master and Copyright to submit. Please submit as many Songs as you'd like, online or per CD. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI. Submissions must be received no later than 11:59 PM (PDT) on Saturday, May 25th, 2024. TAXI # S240525CL

Here is the track (so far anyway...) https://www.taxi.com/members/DVGQpc37Tk ... y-stevens-

Have we gotten way too far off track here?? (no pun intended...) I am feeling a Zeppelin/Whitesnake vibe... and not so much the ref tracks.."getouttahere" is almost a new wave 80's thing to me... We have a couple of other ones going as well, so I am looking to prioritize here....
Any feedback or advice regarding anything...production, the song...etc...is welcomed and encouraged! Thanks!

Hey Bradley,
I like the song. The singer wails. But to me, it feels too much like pure 70s Hard Rock for this listing. The listing calls for modern rock Songs that have their roots in classic rock of the '70s or '80s, BUT ARE NEW AND FRESH. Maybe shoot to make it sound more like the Rival Sons ref track.

Hi Dean-
I was kinda thinking along the same lines, but really do not know "how" to make the adjustment. Would completely different guitar tones accomplish this?? I don't think so, but I just don't know.... Luckily we have two other tracks in the queue that lean more to the Rival Sons track and the Super City track, so fingers crossed!

It sounds a little more 70s hard rock but the production sounds great. I'm always open to co-writes if you need lyrics. You have a great singer.

Hey BradleyHagen, great track! I agree with deantaylor that the production of the track is putting it too squarely in the 70/80s. This is exactly the type of music that hypes me up and I love mixing so if you would like me to help you out then send me a DM, I'll show you my work and we can discuss details.

If however you would rather nail this one down yourself then here's what I'm hearing production wise:

The big reverb on the vocals has a very 1986 vibe. Modern rock vocals usually have a much shorter ambient tail which is often a blend of delay and verb rather than just verb.

The drums in your track are mixed behind the guitars which are quite forward, and that gives it a very 70s vibe. Modern rock mixes are usually more drum-forward with guitars filling in the "sonic gap" between them and the vocals. I don't think you need a completely new guitar tone as you mentioned above but mixing the guitars back a bit and EQing out some of that high end bite would do quite a bit to get them into the ballpark of the ref tracks.

Bass track f@%ken rips! Nicely done.

Hope this helps!

Hey Dude! Nice to meet ya!!
All great points for sure, and I really appreciate it!

RE: Vocal..... If you met this singer, you would think you were in 1986 lol.... I tried to do a tape pong delay with some hall reverb, because there is alot of space in those verses...however, I will rethink it for sure
RE Drums..... Yeah, was going for that intentionally.... I am still confused here....70's song with modern production?? A mix of both??
RE: Guitars .... They are a blend of single coil strats layered over humbucker Les Pauls..... i though it was a "vintagey" vibe, but you are not the first one to point this out!
Bass: Well I am just a dumb bass player from San Diego, so that is what I do! lol
