How's this sound?

Post by guest4254 » Tue Jun 25, 2024 1:00 pm

Just trying to get this mix right. I think I'm pretty close, but my tinnitis keeps me second guessing.
If anyone has a moment, or 3:36, would you be so kind as to give this a listen?
Novelty B'day type rock/pop tune:

Great song! I could hear Phish or (Adrian Belew's) Bears doing something like this. My mix comment is that on my system the bass sounds a bit weak. Maybe others will comment?

FWIW on my headphones I got plenty of bass. I'd maybe like a tiny bit more kick/snare but that's just a personal preference :)

The one thing I noticed is the vocals don't seem to sit in the mix right for me. I'm a bit out of my depth because I mostly do instrumentals, but to my ear the vocals sound detached from the instruments. It's not a levels thing, rather it almost sounds like the vocals are in a completely different physical space from the instruments (which all sound pretty good together). I just wonder about the processing you are doing on the vocals and if there's a way to make them sit down into the instrument mix a bit better.

Just my two cents...it's a fun track!

Very good!

It's a high bpm, so I would drop the drums a bit and make all the instruments more dry, so the vocal probably would standout.
Very small changes.

Thanks for all the great comments! I thought I had my forums set to send me an email if someone replied...just figured no replies. Thankfully I have some time to troll the forums tonight, and I do appreciate the suggestions.

Ah yes, the vocals. After doing some editing on them, I forgot to shut off all the FX before I bounced the track, and so all the FX applied became "baked in"...this is what happens when you put in a 12 hour work day and still try and do some music production into the wee hours. Imagine my surprise when I brought the track up the next day and not only were the original FX on the track, but the track still had the same FX turned on, creating "double the FX"...Took me a while to figure out what I did, so I removed the second set of FX, but still had the original (which I wasn't really done tweaking) on the track with no way of removing, short of trying to re-sing. So I did my best to damage control, tweaking a bit more, taking some frequencies out etc, but now I'm pretty much stuck with the way they are. I've heard the track so many times now, that they seemed good to me.

I'll try WASO's suggestion and see what happens with less FX on the instruments and see if that helps at all.

If anyone else feels like chiming in, that would also be appreciated...

Namaste,

Hey Harry - a note on the email alert: though I could be wrong - I think you ONLY get a notification if the comment/reply INCLUDES (like I've done here) quoting your post (some or all of it).
You should be able to test my theory, if you indeed get an email alerting you to THIS REPLY.

To these old guy ears - to make the 'blend' more coherent - if it were mine:
1) bring the drums up and closer (snare & kick roughly at same volume as the vocal);
2) add a dash of reverb to the vocal so that - as others have pointed out - it sits in the same space with the band.

I think you're really close with this mix; and those few little things would pull it together 'more tightly'.
Good luck with that, Harry.

I'd be surprised if your ears were any older than mine....and then there's the tinnitus...regardless I refuse to give up!

I will certainly give your suggestions a shot as well.

I do appreciate you loaning me your ears! As I do all the others that replied with your thoughts.

I'm not Frazier, and thanks for listening!
