Should I sing my own songs?

Post by amayzlin » Fri Aug 09, 2024 8:18 am

Hey guys,

So I call myself a vocalist  , but I am not a native speaker of the English language... I sing with an accent. I am wondering if I should be singing on my own tracks or hire a native speaker to do it. Please have a listen and give me your honest opinion, this would help a whole lot. Also, if anyone could PLEASE tell me what artist(s) my voice sounds like, that would help a bunch too. Thanks in advance!

Singing in English 'with an accent' is NOT a deal-breaker - in my opinion, by any means - there are more dialects and accents than we can count.
Secondarily - even 'perfect pitch' is not exactly a pre-requisite... but it helps; and for small 'fixes', auto-tune can be your friend.

What matters most is THE EMOTION of the performance: have you captured the attention of your listening audience?!
From just a few bits of the first song - I'd say, your voice certainly works for THAT song - and maybe others; maybe not all.

I also visited the website in your signature - the female singer (Veeka May?) in the YouTube reference has a great voice - especially for young/Pop...
and probably a wider range of appeal. The backing tracks (drum sound?) to these old-guy ears - the overall backing production is not up to the equal of the vocal.
Hope that makes sense: good song, great voice - seems to 'deserving' of even better backing mix/production. Still - it's very well done, overall.

Ultimately - using your own voice for the presentation is gonna have to be evaluated on each song and type and genre.

Hope that helps.
Other opinions may be different or disagree.
Your mileage may vary.

Well that's cool - does she make herself/her vocals available - for hire - for other peoples' song projects?
I'm always looking to add singers' names to my FIRST CALL list, based on the genre, vibe, and emotion of the song.
I understand that some artists ONLY want to sing their own material.

Yes, she's open to "work for hire", no problem.
