Thoughts on listing specifying Male Vocal, female backing vocals ok?

Post by StefEmery » Tue Jan 21, 2025 9:14 pm

Hi! Curious for any feedback for listings that specify Male Vocals - do you think having female backup vocals on the chorus and one verse will make a song get automatically rejected? Listing TAXI # S250122BG for reference. Thanks!

Why take the risk? Unless the female backup vocals are the secret sauce that makes the song, you should probably play it safe and put male backings in. And if the female backup vocals are the secret sauce then you should probably ponder the question: is this the right song for this particular listing?!

I'll caveat the above with that I have only managed to score returns on my submissions thus far, but all of them were for coloring outside of the lines set out in the listing! Don't be me!

Lots of songs with Male leads have female backups so I wouldn't think it'd be an issue personally

Hey Stef!! :D

As long as it's obviously a male lead singing, it shouldn't be a problem. By BG vocals if you mean parallel harmonies on the lead vocal line, I can't imagine an issue. I would avoid female BG vocals that are ever heard by themselves- syncopated, call and response, etc.

Hope all is well!! Keep warm! :)

Best,
Casey

Thanks everyone for your responses! I ended up not submitting bc I think the song was maybe a stretch for the style they wanted anyway - but having a lot of tracks already with male / female lead and the other doing backing vocals this is super helpful to just keep in mind for future submissions! Thanks guys! :D
