My First Wife Was a Sailboat ©2025 Robert George
I still recall that sultry night you asked
How I promised you I didn’t have a past
But I know you wonder what I’m thinkin’ of
I confess it’s my first sweetheart, a long-lost love
That’s why I get a far-off look along the coast
As if my heart was a foggy harbor of ghosts
My first wife was a sailboat
And my dreams still keep her afloat
Laying with her on a bed of sea
Somewhere near Matecumbe Key
Through a thin midnight mist
Even the moon envied her kiss
I’m the only man that ever knew her
And I was always faithful to her
O My first wife was a sailboat
I still hide a picture of us in my soul
Sharing salty blue champagne near Mussel Shoals
With the dolphins and the songs of seagulls’ wings
My hand wore that wheel like a wedding ring
Now an ocean breeze through old seashells
Calls my spirit back to somewhere else
My first wife was a sailboat
And my dreams still keep her afloat
Laying with her on a bed of sea
Somewhere near Matecumbe Key
Through a thin midnight mist
Even the moon envied her kiss
I’m the only man that ever knew her
And I was always faithful to her
O my first wife was a sailboat
That storm took the boat and pier
Leaving me with just a tide of tears
So, when we make love upon the shore
Forgive me if it’s her my heart reaches for
My first wife was a sailboat
And my dreams still keep her afloat
Laying with her on a bed of sea
Somewhere near Matecumbe Key
Through a thin midnight mist
Even the moon envied her kiss
I’m the only man that ever knew her
And I was always faithful to her
O my first wife was a sailboat
My first wife
My first wife was a sailboat
My First Wife was a Sailboat
