Going ALL IN on funk instrumental brief

Post by BradleyHagen » Fri Apr 18, 2025 1:23 pm

Hey Everyone!!!
I am submitting 12 tracks to the funk instrumental brief for "Real Housewives". (TAXI # S250426PD).... Here is one of them. I am not quite sure it quite matches the refs as well as others?? But screw it! I think it is quite dope...Get out your bell bottoms!

Hey Bradley,

I considered that brief for a minute and listened to all the refs:

--This track is cool, but it's not bass/drums-centric like the brief requested. Every single reference has at least part of the track that's only bass and drums, and my guess is they'll want the ones we submit to be even more spare than the refs. This track sounds nice but I'd bet good money it would get returned for having way too much going on.
--It also sounds a bit more disco than funk to me. Those lines can blur a bit, and I think if you really pared down your instrumentation it would help. But also, that bass sound is much more disco than funk imo. Not sure if that's you really playing or a VST, but it needs to have a lot more of that snappy high end.

Those are my .02!

I think you're definitely in the ballpark here. nice sounding horn patches/samples. Has a good development as well. Best of luck!

This is a different genre than what I normally hear from you, but I really like it. Best of luck.

I tend to agree with you on the “busy” lol - but how “spare”? That’s the question…. And yes, I’m really playing bass - lol

I figured you did—your playing sounds great!—only reason I asked is because it would be easier to change the sound of a VST to be funkier. It’s a cool bass line but definitely feels very disco to me. I could be off base on that.

As far as how spare to make it, it seems like they want these tracks to be underscore underneath melodramatic conversations. Ain’t nobody talking over your track…just dancing lol.

Cool song man!
I’m in the same dilemma. It’s a funk song, but it’s got guitar, piano, percussion, and brass—so how busy is too busy?
If it’s for a dialogue scene, the references can be misleading, since they’re packed with other instruments too.
Good luck to both of us!

Hey Andre- This is why I am submitting a variety of tracks to this brief.... Some are WAY more stripped down than this one for sure, and some have super dry 70's drums, not as much horns, etc etc.. I have pretty much written off my chances with this one track, but I liked how it turned out!! lol If it gets returned, it will find a home elsewhere eventually I think

I appreciate the commitment lol

I remember during one of the pitch sessions at the Rally they had all the submitted tracks up on a screen and you had an entire page of tracks you had submitted.

Go Hard Or Go Home is a good way to live!
