Regarding music and melody; or lyrics?
For lyrics & story lines - LISTENING, paying attention for words and phrases that 'pop out' in casual conversation,
or possibly ones that JUMP OUT at you while reading something. I often find things to grab onto that could help frame a song idea.
IF you're looking for SONG IDEAS, keeping a journal (or notepad on a smartphone) - some means of capturing something IN THE MOMENT.
HTH - your mileage may vary.

I use the voice memo app on my iphone ALL THE TIME. Any little melody/groove/lyric or whatever gets recorded as soon as I can vocalize it to get that original "lightbulb" moment documented. I have a ton of little ideas sitting there waiting to be explored.

Exact same. I think of little stuff all the time and if I don't record it immediately it'll be gone forever. So yeah, I have a ton of badly sung ideas on my phone, just tonal enough for me to remember what I meant and use it :)

For me, if my work doesn't produce results for a long time, I would change my production process. On the other hand, if I am getting results, I won't change it.
However, I get tired of my own work, so I try new things every time I make a new song. I'm always trying and testing things, so the level of my work improves by repeating that process.
I think most people complete the melody before proceeding with the track, but in my case, I work on the melody and the track at the same time.
I write and arrange the music myself, so this method works well for me and I enjoy it, so it's not a problem.
However, I think the work would be better if I finished the melody first, but in my case, I sometimes want to change the melody during the arrangement process, so I work on them simultaneously. Even after the track is completed, if I don't like the melody, I will change it.
I work on it little by little, and at that point I'm already tired of listening to my song, but when I start working on it the next day, I feel fresh, so I fix what I thought was a really bad work, or what I thought was a bad work seems really good. It's a very time-consuming method, so I don't recommend it to others at all.

Of course, when I'm on a tight deadline, I don't do much trial and error.
